Boiling Point on the Korean Peninsula

This won’t end well:

Soldiers from China’s People’s Liberation Army have been deployed to defend its border against North Korean trespassers. …

South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reported the new setup does not appear to be a temporary measure, according to the source who spoke Thursday on the condition of anonymity.

The construction of new stations along the border indicates China is taking action after a series of North Korean attacks on Chinese nationals in towns adjacent to the Tumen River.

Chinese soldiers recently shot and killed a person entering the country illegally from North Korea. In April, North Korean soldiers killed three Chinese nationals in the Chinese town of Helong. North Korean soldiers also killed four ethnic Korean-Chinese in December, according to Chinese authorities.

Beijing says very little about North Korean migrants who enter China to earn money, but according to South Korean newspaper Asia Business, the source said the long-term presence of China’s national army indicates Beijing could be building up forces to defend against a sudden influx of refugees from the isolated country.

It looks like a humanitarian crisis will break out first.

North Korean soldiers defecting or killing others is not a new phenomenon (see here). That China is stepping up its defenses and closing up its border (more so than usual) is indicative that Kim’s North Korea is splintering apart faster than thought.

It would be somewhat ironic if it took Red China to ‘free’ N. Korea… And yet the N. Koreans would probably be much better off…

Obama will rush to North Korea’s defense.

North Korea is enjoying the worst drought in a century.
People will stay put and face starvation and cannibalism, or try to leave and take the risk of being shot as deserters.
Where is the condemnation, or at least an expression of “strong concern”, by UN agencies (UNHCR and OHCHR) over China’s closing of their border to refugees?
It was swiftly forthcoming over Hungary’s planned border fence.

If North Korea points its nukes away from us and Japan and toward China, the situation couldn’t be all bad.
