Greenfield: The Incredible Entitlement of the Welfare Lobby

unnamed-2Progressive America has a fever and the only solution is more welfare.

Celebrities are trying to buy only $29 worth of fair trade arugula at Whole Foods and then taking snapshots of it in a mistaken effort to show how little food stamps buy.

Obama is urging more social welfare spending as the answer to the race riots he stirred up across the country by embracing the Ferguson “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” hoax.

Outraged rich liberals are furiously lecturing the rest of the country on income inequality as if there were no escaping the fact that we’re a society of greedy plutocrats that doesn’t care about the poor…

There’s just no penetrating that industrial-scale wall of willful ignorance.

    Q) “Why ah gots to pay fo’ water? Water free!”

    A) Yes, water is free. Feel free to head on down to your nearest lake/river and take as much as you can transport back to your home. Just a quick heads up — you’re going to have to somehow purify the water you wish to use for drinking or cooking.

    • Clausewitz

Yeah water is free. Start digging your well.

      • dance…dancetotheradio

        To China.

  • DMB

When it comes to welfare programs were people get money or services for free there is an old saying and that is if you give a man a fish you can feed him for a day but if you teach a man how to fish you can feed him for a lifetime. So in other words these people should get jobs and learn to depend for themselves instead of big government and they will be a lot better off but until then they are screwed.

    • jayme

There was a idea in Ottawa a few years ago teach how people on welfare to hunt now the left had a huge fit saying this is not right so the never did happen.

      • mobuyus

Same thing happened when the Shepherds of Good Hope had an allotment garden. Thinking it would be a nice break in the countryside from the alley-ways of downtown, they brought out a busload of “clients” to harvest the bounty, and teach them how food makes it to the plate. Well that didn’t go over to well with the “clients” they accused the Shepherds of slavery and demanded to be returned to the downtown area. Not one carrot would they pull from the ground. I wish they would starve to death.

The feds in the States have been trying to coax urban blacks to go camping etc. at National Parks but, oddly enough, they’re not into it.

          • mobuyus

Welfare and easy living will not be impinged upon.

          • Justin St.Denis

Which is why, when the going gets tough, there will be very few african-Americans around.

I’m not that unsympathetic to blacks aversion to camping.
            Why go back?
            Why go back?

        • dance…dancetotheradio

So, you’re saying they wouldn’t even steal food?

    • Alain

The problem with that is that it would put the whole poverty industry out of business, and that includes government and all the poverty pimps getting money from the government “to deal with the poverty problem”.

      • dance…dancetotheradio

They pretend to help the people they’re helping.

I don’t care aboutbthe poor anymore. I see a dozen drunks panhandling for booze money everytime i go to the local grocery store, except on welfare cheque day when they are across the street spending it all at the liquir store.

I’m tired of at the end of each year looking at my finances and seeing the 40+% of my income paid out in taxes and knowing that the majority of those taxes are going to support people who have NO intention of ever getting a job, who drink themselves stupid every night and then pop out FAS kids who will spend their lives also on welfare drinking and screwing on the public loonie.

I’m tired of some 400lbs women telling me that because her ancestors where mistreated that she and her brood deserve a free ride paid for by me. I never owned a slave and I never burned down a village, none of my ancestors did and that women has so little grasp of reality that she sees nothing wrong with her demands.

I’m tired of my kids wondering why the kids at school have x-boxes, dirt bikes, new clothes every month eat out all the time and get to go to summer camp every year. When those kids parent(s) have no jobs except panhandling.

    • David Murrell

I was visiting Toronto last week at an academic conference at Ryerson U. — and one thing I noticed was the increasing number of Muslim women panhandling, sitting there on the concrete pavement.

You forget dimes and nickels. Spread that pork fat around!

    • jayme

The new trend in Ottawa is if your on welfare you can work something like 60 hours a month so people are saying I want a job that will give me more then 60 hours so I can keep welfare.

      • dance…dancetotheradio

I might be inclined to accept a sliding scale up to a vanishing point.
There has to be an assessment of what that would be.
If benefits diminish faster than earnings then it’s pointless as motivation.
If benefits diminish slower than earnings then it is motivation.
        Where is that sweet spot?
And it’s not about the guaranteed annual income.
        That removes all motivation.

        • jayme

I would like to see a law if your being offered a full time job and on welfare you have to take it.

If you aren’t conservative after you get your first paycheque then I really don’t know how anyone can ever get through to you.
I had my epiphany when I was fourteen.
By the way, I still have the cheque from my first tax return.
It was for a dollar eighty six in 1982.

      • mobuyus

I had to beg for a social insurance number at sixteen so I could get my paycheques.

        • dance…dancetotheradio

I got an exemption because of my decent marks.
And we were poor, too, so they must have taken that into account.
“Ohm, he’s from the shitty side of the tracks. He might not amount to anything anyway. We’ve seen what comes out of that neighbourhood.
Might as well get him on the fast track to dishwashing.”

          • mobuyus

35 years an injection drug user the only tracks I knew were on my arms. I could not receive my pay cheques until I proffered a social insurance number. I believe I was the youngest person in Canada to receive a social insurance number at that time. I used to assemble wheel caddies for sliding patio screen doors at 10 cents apiece but without a social insurance number they would not release my paychecks to me. I am now a guitar player.

My adversity has helped me in the long run.

I injected my crutches, but yes I am here now. And here shall I stay.

sadly , I came across a few Yutes that learned to game the system .
First off , they lie about an abusive life at home as to get welfare once they are 16.
Then they find part time jobs to pay the rent and have money left of booze and drugs. There is also a program to start a business which is paid for at a price of about $3000.00 which helps with not having top look for work as it has money given to them for start-up costs that I saw got to a wide screen TV and more drugs.

The whole thing is a charade where Welfare workers claim they are helping Yutes find jobs which keeps them busy as the Yutes drag out the Business program for grants to buy stuff and they don’t seem to be held responsible for the money when they Don’t start their business by the endless excuses.

    • Clausewitz

Sorry dude, I support charity, not welfare. They are not the same thing. Maybe you need to hit the New Testament one more time.

      • Clausewitz

Oops sorry, I miss read. Thought you where equating welfare to biblical charity. It’s been a long day.

        • BillyHW

Clausewitz understands! You must be a cis-man. Keep voting, my friend.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

I think that charity doesn’t reach enough people and it is mainly a slogan on the libertarian right rather than something that can help out others that don’t have any ability to get jobs. I have noticed for much of my life that capitalism in its current form cannot create full employment. This has mainly to do with the fact that the rich will not give enough and it is the responsibility of government to take the lead. When the market is destructive and not regulated, you need to have those safety mechanisms in place. Democracy and regulation protect against the destructive nature of the market. Without regulation and safety nets, you have anarcho-capitalism or in essence a system whereby you let the market dictate everything and that leads to oligarchy, the final outcome of disaster capitalism. So, yes, capitalism needs those protections. It also explains why safety nets and welfare exist. In the US, they don’t have that nature, and they prove it by being the most oligarchy, fascistic and social Darwinist nation on Earth. And yes Obama is merely Republican lite.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

People seem to forget that capitalism is a combination of systems.

          • BillyHW

            Why do you hate Jesus?

          • Billy Bob Thornton

I am basing my answers on the fact that capitalism is not supposed to be extreme, but to people on here they want it to be pure capitalism or letting the market decide and government not being a partner. I don’t believe in starve the beast and letting people suffer for the decisions of politicians. I think the safety nets have to be there. Affordability is part of capitalism as well. Also, when jobs are not created, is the alternative to let people be on the streets? The fact is the real unemployment number is close to 20% in the USA. In the 2000’s, America gave away thousands of manufacturing jobs to China and India. Bush could have removed China and India from the WTO and from international bodies but chose not to. So that is why when you look at certain stories they give a different picture from Obama and even what the Republicans want. So yes I agree with regulations and benefits for those who need it since capitalism in its most predatory form will start attacking itself. The way things are now in the US and the West there is massive lack of jobs for those that are here. That means all that is left is service sector, benefits and a large underclass. No wonder people are not having children. And you think tax cuts alone will help? I would say of course not. Those manufacturing jobs that were used to build a strong economy are gone forever. The same with small businesses able to compete. Corporations buy out businesses. Governments are there to make rules to allow for competition. Governments I feel have worked against people for decades. You can lower tax cuts to zero and it won’t fix the US and for the most part Western economies. It is a race to the bottom!

I was at a Local Medical centre and there was this Petition there for people to sign which I read and could not believe that the NDP MPP would ask people if the prices of healthy food were out of their reach and do they think that the Government should give them money each month to pay for part of the food bill..

Who the hell would say no to more FREE stuff from the taxpayers where it could go to more booze or lottery tickets and smokes.
Why not ask people if the Government should nationalize the Auto Industry and provide free cars for those on welfare or low income.

    • Justin St.Denis

My wife and I noticed these little tubs of pre-cut vegetable blends for frying, to use in soups, just to boil and serve etc. The prices reflected the additional processing of the veggies under the clear plastic wrap. “Wow,” said my wife. “Look at this! People are too bloody lazy to cut vegetables anymore? Look at these prices! You have to be batshit crazy to buy this.”

      We were at NO FRILLS.

    • jayme

Its a myth that healthy food is out of reach just a example I was in Freshco and they had whole chickens on sale for $6-10 and they had frozen pizza on sale as well where did most of the welfare people go right to the frozen pizza.
