French gendarmes round up and evict migrants who were living in the camp close in Calais
French border police have stopped migrants trying to sneak into Britain 18,000 times so far this year – more than four times the number stopped in the whole of 2013.
The figures reveal that the number of migrants attempting to reach British shores is more than double than that for the whole of last year, the border police report said.
Most of the migrants stopped were found stowed aboard lorries boarding Channel Tunnel shuttle trains in Coquelles and ferries at Calais port, police said…
…The mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart, has blamed Britain’s ‘black market economy’ and ‘cushy benefits system’ for the migrant crisis in northern France.
She said the UK should be forced to abandon border checks for travellers arriving from Europe to help move the migrants away.
Ms Bouchart said: ‘They want to go to England because they can expect better conditions on arrival there than anywhere else in Europe or even internationally.
