Barbara Kay: Sorry LGBT, sex and gender are not the same

The precise nature of words matters. The imprecise use of a word that has a very specific meaning can make the difference between an alleged injustice and a complete waste of newsprint and everyone’s time, including that of activists.

We have a perfect example of this phenomenon in the case of Morgane Oger, chair of the B.C. Trans Alliance Society, who, not satisfied with provincial and federal governments allowing sex designations to be changed on key identity documents, “wants to abolish gender references altogether from birth certificates.” The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal is reviewing her complaint.

Background: B.C. Human Rights Tribunal to consider striking gender designation from birth certificates

Is there no group of idiots that are too insane to be accomidated by the “human rights” inquisitors?

    • Alain

No, the more insane the better. In fact the very existence of these stalinist tribunals in a free society is in itself insane.

    • LauraS

And who, exactly, do they think they are kidding? Trans folks, unlike some drag queens, look EXACTLY like men trying to pass as female. And vice versa. No one is fooled! It is a mental disorder–akin to anorexia, methinks.

      • Exile1981

Actually there is a doctor in Europe who has great success treating transgender conditions using the same methods as phantom limb syndrome (where people think an arm or hand etc is not actually theirs and they tend to eventually cut off the offending limb if not treated)

  • LauraS

This drives me crazy. Birth certificates are HISTORIC documents. Members of my family are involved in genealogy, I know how much they rely on birth/marriage/death records dating back hundreds of years. Altering birth certificates is flat out wrong. It does a disservice to the child, to the wider family and to anyone trying to trace the family background in years to come. You can’t change HISTORY. You are male, female or in need of mental health support.

    • Frau Katze

They’re pandering to a tiny minority.

      • ontario john

Maybe certificates should just say, “Whatever”

        • eMan14

But that would be the parent imposing their “feeling” of what the child is, instead of what he or she is was born as. So if the mature child at, say age 15, decides they are not what they were born as, they should be able to have their birth certificate amended. “other” would suffice.

For the sake of defending the practice, what is the benefit of listing M/F on birth certificates and drivers licenses? I’m assuming it’s important to things like a census and demographics data. As for a license what is the purpose? I would argue that the more info used to identify someone the better, but there are people in the comments arguing it’s superfluous information. I’m looking for defensible and convincing arguments for why sex identification is important.

    • Frau Katze

It helps with identification. See the above comment about genealogy. It would be a lot harder to research without that info.

Think of the police releasing info on a criminal on the run…but they don’t know if the person is male or female?

      • Speaksvolumes

I’m thinking more of a cop pulling someone over. Are they using the M/F to identify that person? I would think in the majority of cases it’s quite obvious whether someone is male or female. The cop is looking at the photo to see if it matches the person they’ve pulled over and then might quiz them on their DOB. But why do we need sex listed on a drivers license (not saying we don’t, just looking for a convincing reason or scenario in which that is important).

        • Minicapt

The ‘need’ is not a requirement, it improves the usefulness of the document. As when the heavily bearded “Lucy” hands ‘her’ licence to the nice policemen, who notices the photo is of a female blonde, and the box marked “M/F” is checked “F”: there is thus an incongruity which may require further investigation.
Sometimes rhetorical questions are simply rhetoric.

          Cheers

          • Speaksvolumes

Even so, if you’re making a comparison of the actual person to the photo, wouldn’t that be enough to determine they weren’t the same? If heavily bearded ‘Lucy’ doesn’t match the female blonde in the photo, what difference does the M/F designation make?
There has to be a stronger argument for the reason why it’s listed.

        • eMan14

Sometimes it’s not so obvious. And it gives me the creeps.

    • WalterBannon

because sex is a simple and unchangeable bio-metric that can be used for identification, which is the entire purpose of identification documents like the birth certificate. Any more strawman questions?

      • Speaksvolumes

You’re a jerk. I specifically said I was asking because I was defending the practice of listing sex on identifying documents but I want strong arguments to defend it. It wasn’t a strawman.

    • Exile1981

It also helps with checking that the identification has not been modified or altered.

  • Frau Katze

These people are getting more and more aggressive and are starting to seriously piss me off.

I’m not particularly intolerant but these people are pushing way too hard.

  • Alain

At this rate why even bother with a birth certificate? If the biological sex at birth is not important, then neither is age or for that matter what if later the individual thinks he or she is a cat, a dog or a cow?

    • Rosenmops

      I self-identify as a pink pug.

  • Those demented tranny freaks won’t sit still until they destroy any traces of normalcy left in Canada. But they are everywhere – below you see a Japanese TV super-tranny called Matsuko Deluxe. He/she is a regular at food-tasting shows. I took the picture from the last night’s show when Matsuko ate five small jars of different mayonnaise. Still, the trannies are not taken seriously in Japan.

    • Alain

No, they are only good for entertainment in Japan.

  • ontario john

For the love of God, can I for once turn on the tv or read a paper where the main stories are not about the plight of homosexuals in Western cities?? I know its the most important human rights issue on the planet but there might be more important things happening somewhere in the world.

    • Blind Druid

      Like Islamic Jihad perhaps.

  • canminuteman

Yeah, sex has to do with biology and gender has to do with grammar.

    Trans! Trans! Trans!
I can remember when the only *Trans* known to exist was ‘Trans American Airways’.

    • Exile1981

Next thing you know Trans-fat will need a name change as it’s offensive to the other trans snowflakes.
