John Nash, Mathematician in ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ Dies in Crash

TRENTON, N.J.—The Nobel Prize-winning mathematician whose struggle with schizophrenia was chronicled in the 2001 movie “A Beautiful Mind” has died in a car crash along with his wife in New Jersey. John Forbes Nash Jr. was 86.

Police say John and Alicia Nash were killed in a taxi crash on the New Jersey Turnpike on Saturday. A colleague who had accepted an award with Mr. Nash in Norway says the couple had taken a taxi from the Newark airport.

That’s a particularly crappy way to die.

    Muslim driver?

The Nashes were traveling in a Ford Crown Victoria taxi on the New Jersey Turnpike when their driver, Tarek Girgis, attempted to pass another car, according to New Jersey State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams.

So he was killed by a diverse cab ride?

I’m sure Tarik Girgis will have much to offer the world.

Don’t know why, but people in taxis never seem to wear seat belts.

Prof. Nash shared his Nobel Prize with two Holocaust survivors. Their game theory remains a major analytical tool in scientific inquiry.

In the movie it is suggested that Nash’s work ‘disproved’ Adam Smith. In fact the opposite is the case: Nash’s work provided a theoretical basis for Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” insight into the market process.
