Downtown is overrated. Go visit a farm. It smells better too.
What about Leonard Cohen’s cover of Barbie Girl?
I like MCC — haven’t heard her for a long time. Good cover. I just heard this on Austin City Limits:
That was good.
Here’s a vid of the original songwriter singing one of her biggest hits on Letterman:
I like this. I don’t think I’ve ever heard another version of Downtown, other than Petula Clark. It’s refreshing.
Yes, I like it too.
Every time I hear the Petula Clark version I think of that one sceen in “Flight of the Intruder” where an A-6 pilot and bomber/navigator are singing that song as they are flying over downtown Hanoi and bombing the crap out of a missile park, with what seems like everyone in North Vietnam back shooting at them.
Petula Clark re-recorded this song – a very slow, contemplative interpretation – on her last CD entitled LOST IN YOU, which was released a couple of years ago. A fantastic CD, btw, and well worth buying. Petula’s voice is as great as ever, and her new material is amazingly good.
I will check that out.
The “single” from the album was a HUGE hit in Europe. You can google the video. The song is called CUT COPY ME and it is amazingly contemporary yet still pure Petula. The album was HAILED in the UK, France, Italy etc. Barely a blip in North America. An amazing CD from a great artist at 80 years of age.
