How police kept track of the Trekkies: Met drew up secret dossier into Star Trek and The X-Files

Star Trek and The X-Files were among science-fiction TV shows monitored by Scotland Yard over fears they posed a potential threat to national security, it was revealed yesterday.

Nineties TV shows Dark Skies, Roswell, Millennium and the film Lawnmower Man were also watched by the Metropolitan Police Special Branch, according to newly-released files.

Police were concerned British fans of the US shows would kill themselves or turn against society, while they also kept tabs on the shows to protect the country from rioting and cyber-attacks.

“…authorities were worried that growing numbers of people were finding it difficult to separate fantasy from reality.”

Yet Islam isn’t a threat; who’s having trouble separating fantasy from reality?

    • Frau Katze

The authorities use a different definition of “reality.”

I don’t think that word means what they think it means.

          its more doublespeak

      • Well, as long as they weren’t stopping actual crimes or anything.

    • Someone decided our police forces should just forget all about policing.

  • Tom Forsythe

Having to watch Lawnmower Man is punishment enough.

Nice work if you can get it…

It’s true, much of Star Trek was terribly slow, but I never wanted to kill myself. Well, maybe half-way through Star Trek: The Motion Picture … I imagine the suicide rate blipped after that came out.

Wrath of Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan more than made up for it.

      • That was the best.

          Was not.
I can’t watch that movie without thinking of Corinthian leather.

  • Dana Garcia

Were the cops PAID to watch Star Trek and the X-Files?

  • What?

This seems to be somewhat influenced by the writings of Jacques Vallee, who wrote about UFO cults, and also put forth the theory that some UFO incidents were actually staged by government/military for the purpose of experimenting with mind control. Ironically, that theory was quite brilliantly spoofed in an episode of The X Files entitled “Jose Chung’s “From Outer Space””.

who was keeping track of the fascists at Special Branch?

    • Drunk_by_Noon

The Greys watch over the shape-shifting Reptilians, who watch over Special Branch, but who watches the Greys?

      • El Martyachi

        the Masons.
