Happy Victoria Day Everyone!

Hope you are all enjoying the long weekend. Five things about Queen Victoria you may not know…

So far only one house has been damaged by fireworks in Toronto. Damn kids.

This is Pip’s idea of a perfect Victoria Day, well actually every day.

Pip snooze

Do Canadians feel an attachment to the overseas monarchy? It seems odd to recognize the queen as sovereign.

    • There are many who do, for most it is an afterthought I suspect.

      • Alain

Count me as one who does, since that is the foundation of our parliamentary system. In spite of its warts I find it superior to the American system. At the same time I find that all systems of democracy are deteriorating and far from their original formation and intent, which does not bode well for the future.

I kind of like that Canada is the only country in the World that celebrates Victoria Day. I like the monarchy sometimes and sometimes I don’t. Usually when Charles is doing something.

I remember being required to watch the first real documentary of the royal family for history class. I still recall Charles tuning his cello so tight that the string broke and hit Edward in the face. I got the impression the Charles did it on purpose and was not concerned about his brother at all. I also remember thinking the kids were spoiled brats.

The problem with democracies, is that eventually people only vote for whoever promises the most stuff. So, you end up with politicians, who don’t really care about what the country really needs and only go into it for what they can get out. Then everything goes downhill from there.

I think we’ve passed that point already.

    • I don’t.

I am grateful for the chance to barbecue.

As we used to sing when I was a kid in Calgary:
    The twenty-fourth of May
    Is the Queen’s Birthday

The holiday is, now, on the third Monday in May.

    • Maggat

“if you don’t give us a holiday
      we’ll all run away”
Christ, all us primary school kids sang that while we danced around the May Pole.

  • Uncle_Waspy

For all its faults, the monarchy was a grand unifier.

Happy Victoria Day, everybody! Get the BBQ going, get into the sauce and make sure the lawn darts are extra sharp!

Agree that having a stable national parent, separate from the elected people, provides a kind of psychological unity.

      • Uncle_Waspy

You’re right, Dana. If nothing else, it gave us an identity. Now, we have no identity. We have nothing but a void, to be filled in with…….well, you know. Essentially everything that is the polar opposite of Judeo-Christian hetero normative.

Early this morning my Canadian flag came down and was replaced with the Union flag (Union Jack). Which will fly till the 24th

(A culture of whiteness ruled during her reign — so says OISE, the Star, CBC News and the Globe).
