Vancouver gay film fest bans ‘overt nationalism’ in wake of Israeli flag controversy

A gay film festival in Vancouver has banned “overt expressions of nationalism” after organizers came under fire over an advertisement featuring an Israeli flag.

The advertisement in last year’s guidebook for the Vancouver Queer Film Festival, placed by the local gay Jewish group Yad b’Yad, featured a gay pride flag alongside an Israeli flag. That led to accusations of “pinkwashing,” the supposed tactic of using Israel’s support for gay rights to divert attention from its treatment of the Palestinians.

Following the ad’s publication, two directors withdrew their films from the festival and the festival donated the ad revenue to a third party, the Canadian Jewish News reported.

“We now have stronger policies that will enable us to make sure all our partnerships reflect our values and allow us to focus on bringing people together through film,” Shana Myara, the festival’s director of programming, told the newspaper.

Jonathan Lerner, spokesman for Yad b’Yad, told the CJN that the festival’s revised policies are a form of censorship…

A perverted thought, but it is a possibility. After all, these people think girls can be turned into boys and vice-versa. Ever see a surgically constructed penis? After another posting on this site, I actually researched and saw several for myself. And boy, am I glad I got a “real” one! Ditto the fake (surgically constructed) vaginas. I am so lucky I married a “born” girl!

The LGBT agenda forced my hand. This led to me discovering the truth in the old song: “Ain’t nothin’ like the real thing, Baby / Ain’t nothin’ like the real thing!”

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Unless, that is, it’s a fake penis.

        • Justin St.Denis

If only a surgically constructed penis looked as much like a real penis as a cigar does! They don’t. And they don’t even reach “cigarillo” in size, btw.

Looking forward, as we speak, to my brother bringing me back a box of Montecristo #2’s from Cuba. Ah, Montecristo. 🙂

As for the “cigarillo” size, this reminds me of the not too great wine-tipped thin cigars I smoked sometimes in high school in the mid-80s.

            EDIT: just remembered, “Colts Mild”

I can’t wait for Fag Fest to ban someone for waving the Palestinian flag.

    • FactsWillOut

You can and will wait, for a long, long time.

Nothing brings people together like banning something.
I can only imagine all the togetherness a good public hanging or with-burning would bring.

I have to say the Vancouver Queer Film Festival (VQFF) is trying to do the right thing here in what they said was a very polarized debate.

In our multicultural society the Israeli flag is viewed very negatively in some circles. So much so that directors were pulling their films from the festival in protest. The VQFF declined to not join the BDS movement but did prohibit overt displays of nationalism including flags in advertising to appease the protestors.

However, Yad B’Yad (Ad sponsor) is not happy about this. Their spokesman Lerner was deeply disappointed by the policy changes. “… this curtails all nationalist groups from demonstrating their country’s pride for the LGBTQ community,”.

Can’t please them all I guess. Who knew that gay cinema was so political?

    Bring these

From the link; “Israeli films could only be included in the festival if they sought to create “critical dialogues about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Israeli occupation,” ”

    I suppose a film that probed the following would not meet their rather stringent guidelines;

” The Hamas-controlled Gaza strip has declared homosexuality punishable by death. Hamas cofounder Mahmoud Zahar has said, “You in the West do not live like human beings. You do not even live like animals. You accept homosexuality. And now you criticize us? ”

Gay activists have some mighty queer ideas about right and wrong.

While Lerner made the statement, “Israeli films could only be included in the festival if they sought to create critical dialogues about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Israeli occupation”, I found no evidence in the rest of the article that the film festival would only include Israeli films if they made such a political statement. All I see is that they banned showing flags in ads.

I have call BS on that one, but don’t really feel like searching for the specific VQFF policy changes to either prove or disprove Lerner’s claim.

Nevertheless, that directors would pull their films from the festival in solidarity with those that would have them executed does boggle the mind but ideologogues often have all sorts of funny contradictions.

Ideologues are frequently batshit crazy. I am not the only one to have noticed this, surely!
