Greek town wants Star of David off Holocaust memorial

Jewish groups were infuriated by a Greek town’s demand that the Star of David to be removed from a new Holocaust memorial or they will not permit its display.

The American Jewish Committee said Friday that its partner body in Greece, the Central Board of Jewish Communities, reported that municipal authorities in the Greek port of Kavala had canceled a May 17 ceremony unveiling the memorial.

A Star of David is engraved into the monument. The authorities want the ancient Jewish symbol, which also features on the Israeli flag, removed before they allow the memorial’s display.

“How can it be that the eternal symbol of the Jewish people — the very symbol that the Nazis required Jews to wear in the death camps and ghettos of Europe during the Second World War — is deemed unfit for public display in Kavala?” AJC’s executive director, David Harris, said in a statement.

The memorial commemorates the 1,484 Jews in the northern city murdered by the Nazis…

  • I bet they’re leftists….

Hard to say. Golden Dawn are anti-Semitic too. Could be either…or both.

      • UCSPanther

The Greeks are a strange bunch. I have seen some pretty rabid communists and neo-nazis emerge from there.

I also understand that Greece has a very high index of antisemitic attitudes, rivaling that of some of the worst Arab nations according to the ADL…

  • Why even bother with the memorial?

  • Alain

Holocaust memorial is fine provided there is no reference to Jews. Now I get it.

Don’t forget, it wasn’t really a Holocaust either, according to our “peace partner, Muckmudd Abyss.

“Meanwhile, Greek Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture,
Education, and Religious Affairs, Giorgos Kalantzis, said “‘As an
Orthodox Christian, I feel deeply insulted by this issue, because it
would be as if someone asked us to erase or modify for ‘aesthetic
reasons’ the symbol of the cross on the tombs of our grandfathers
executed by the Germans,” according to a statement released by the AJC.”
    Good on you, Giorgos Kalantzis,

Like so many other Europeans, the people of Kavala wanted the Nazis to solve their Jewish problem for them.

It’s Greece why are you surprised?

  • Billy Bob Thornton

I actually support the Golden Dawn mainly because the parties in Greece are very much responsible for destroying that country through years of migration, bank collusion, outsourcing of jobs, and destroying the state. People that complain about the possible anti-Semitism of the Golden Dawn also say the same things about the BNP. People just don’t want policies of nationalism otherwise the dichotomy of left-right would change forever and then the parties would actually have to govern in the best interest of the average person. Golden Dawn is firmly for anti-usury policies which the mainstream of Europe is very much for. Don’t forget usury destroyed the Roman Empire. Millenials need hope and it is easy to understand why so many want real nationalism and not populism cloaked in nationalism like the UKIP party. Nick Griffin was the best hope for Britain. The BBC tore him down.

Griffin is right about how Europe’s idea is to destroy the nation state. His ideas are somewhat left wing for economic ideas but they oppose globalism which many should oppose. I understand in today’s globalized world it is very difficult to oppose globalism but his nationalist economic message and more government control is definitely something nationalist minded people should support.

Griffin all the way! Too bad in the recent UK elections the BNP was reduced.

Reduced is somewhat of an an understatement.
The Official Monster Raving Loony Party fielded twice as many candidates as BNP in this year’s general election. Eight BNP candidates stood for election, down from the 339 that stood in 2010. Party membership is down to about 500, from 4200 just eighteen months ago.

“…. usury destroyed the Roman Empire.”
I don’t remember that in Edward Gibbon’s tomes.
      “The BBC tore him down.”
You can’t tear down what isn’t up.

  • Greeks were anti-Semites since antiquity. In Alexandria, during Greco-Roman times, pogroms against Jews were common.

    • Mind you, I love Greece. Its contribution to Western philosophy, for a start. But also the country itself. The people are also nice on the whole, even when they know you’re Jewish.

      • Surele Surele

why do you say “even when they know you’re Jewish”? You should not have to say it. Our neighbors in Poland always said this about my mom: Mrs. Nusbaum is such a nice lady, even though she is Jewish. But of course, this is the reality. In Greece, in Poland (still) and all around this planet.
