Amtrak and Our Indecent Political Culture

Americans have now had more than 48 hours to grieve about Tuesday night’s Amtrak crash outside of Philadelphia that took the lives of eight persons and injured more than 200 others. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined but the fact that the train was going more than 100 miles per hour — twice the speed limit — would seem to indicate it was the result of human error or negligence. Yet even before rescuers finished removing the bodies, talking heads and pundits on the left were blaming this tragedy on Republicans who refuse to adequately fund Amtrak. While the pushback against this particularly nasty example of specious argument has begun, the willingness of our political class to exploit this tragedy tells us just how low our political culture has sunk.

Engineer was a homo activist. That makes him innocent of any crimes in today’s world

I doubt there’s any accidental way to accelerate a train from 50 to 106mph in one minute.

It would seem so, but like Ferguson, Zimmerman, and Baltimore*, everything we know has been filtered through the authorities and the media, both of whom have an agenda. Let’s try to avoid jumping to conclusions.

*And every other story that we read, hear, or watch.

“Never let a crisis go to waste”, sayeth every progressive ever.

Why is the union protecting this guy from speaking? So far we have heard lack of infrastructure spending and now there is some story about a “missile” striking the train. So far the only causal fact is that the train was going 112% over the speed limit.

I think that since there are 17000 bridges and places in the USA that are under extreme alert that no the US does not spend enough money on infrastructure. I am not a liberal or a progressive but this has to do with so much money over the past 14+ years spent on the military. The US could have invented new technologies, reinvented itself and became an economic superpower. The only thing that the US leads at is military spending. They have spent about 10 trillion dollars in the past 14+ years on their so-called War on Terror which I think has been a gift to the security apparatus and the military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned about.

U.S. military spending is about 4% of GDP.

Has anyone asked if it was possible this train’s system was hacked?
