BC: Second refugee family from Syria arrives in the Okanagan; more to come

Another Syrian family of refugees is preparing for life in the Okanagan, and churches plan to sponsor more.

The two parents and five children escaped Syria soon after the civil war broke out there in 2011… They got an email the next morning confirming the family arrives May 20.

“Let me tell you, we breathed a huge sigh of relief,” said Marilyn Perry, who chairs the Central Okanagan Refugee Committee, which represents Winfield United, Rutland United and Kelowna’s First United churches.

The family will be the second from Syria to settle in the Okanagan since their country became a living hell. The Albetar family arrived at Kelowna Airport in late March.

Volunteers with Summerland United Church found a small house for the Arabic-speaking parents and three kids…

Three Catholic churches have applied to sponsor more families, Perry said…

…Even so, some critics resent Muslim families moving here from the Middle East, where terrorist bombings and militant attacks are reported almost daily. Members of Perry’s own church have asked what’s stopping the young people from becoming terrorists…
