NHS doctor and his nurse wife ‘kept Nigerian man a slave for 24 YEARS at their London home’

An NHS doctor enslaved a man in his home for 24 years after smuggling him into Britain as a child, a court heard yesterday.

Emmanuel Edet demanded to be called ‘master’ as he beat his victim and subjected him to a ‘life of misery’, it was claimed.

Edet, 60, and his wife Antan, 58, a senior hospital nurse, are accused of stripping Ofonime Inuk of his passport and making him work up to 17 hours a day.

Only the tip of the iceberg.

Cases have come to light in the US as well, though usually involving Arabs. Their victims probably don’t realize how sympathetic and helpful the average westerner would be to their plight and hence don’t even try to break out.

      • winoceros

Not Arabs. Muslims. They’re Muslims who feel entitled to own slaves. These could be?

I read about one in which a Saudi princess was accused of slavery and got off. I think she had to leave the country and don’t know what happened to the slave.

          Working at Tim Hortons? 😉

    • Millie_Woods

Yep. If this case went undetected for 24 years you can bet there’s lots more.

just a snowflake on the tip…

Both should be sentenced to life in prison.

It is always amusing to watch a sophisticated but nonetheless surprisingly naive (or self-deceiving) culture react to the reality of the primitive nature and/or brutality of another culture.

For example, we have several friends from South Korea where I was stationed for about two years, Canadians would be shocked to learn the real labour practices in South Korea, but these practices are among the main reasons our friends came to Canada. Now, to them, there are two kinds of South Koreans in Canada:

    – the ones like them who wish to enjoy the benefits of prevailing Canadian labour legislation, learn to speak English and work in the mainstream Canadian labour market;

    – the South Korean immigrant who works for a SK business in Canada and puts up with the same labour practices used back in SK – illegal labour practices in Canada but who is going to complain when they barely speak English?

When you leave savagery behind, you must leave both the savagery that affected you negatively AND the savagery from which you benefitted.

And South Korea would be one of the more ‘enlightened’ of the non-Western countries.

      • Justin St.Denis

        Precisely my point.

As a multicultural country Britain is supposed to respect their culture as equal to everybody else’s!

Either accept slavery or accept that multiculturalism is a failure that undermines Western civilization.

  • marty_p

I am confused – I thought only whites practiced slavery (or so I had been taught in school).
My Roots inspired mindset has been destroyed 🙁

    • MannieP

Yep! Yet only the European nations and those settled by Europeans ever effectively eliminated Slavery. It is still practiced in Africa, the Mid East, and East Asia.

    • nobull

don’t forget – who brought the slaves to the docks to be auctioned off?

Other blacks/warring tribes. All that black history they don’t want to forget (as they ignore their true “roots”/history)

  • WalterBannon

I am feeling the benefits of that diversity now

can we all keep slaves now?

  • Norman_In_New_York

Well, the African slave trade had to start somewhere.

  • lolwut?

These types of stories have been popping up in Canada as well.

This is only one of several involving Chinese and Indian immigrants in BC doing this.

  • bluenoser

This is a regular thing today in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the other Muslim countries in the M.E….
