The top bureaucrat in Brussels yesterday launched an extraordinary attack on Britain, warning that the ‘Anglo Saxon world’ would attempt to tear the European project apart if Greece quits the euro.
Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, said a ‘Grexit’ would expose the EU to huge risks and insisted it is ‘not an option’.
Greece is thought to be just weeks away from running out money, raising the prospect of it being declared bankrupt, defaulting on its debts and being ejected from the single currency bloc.
But Mr Juncker, an arch europhile, appeared to suggest such a drastic move would be an opportunity for eurosceptics to bring about an end to Europe as we know it once and for all.
‘If we were to accept, if Greece were to accept, if others were to accept, that Greece could leave the solidarity and prosperity that is the eurozone, we would put ourselves at risk because some, notably in the Anglo Saxon world, would try everything to deconstruct the euro area piece by piece, little by little,’ he said…
