Baltimore’s Indictments and How Not to Fix America’s Cities

Baltimore got the celebration this afternoon that many in Ferguson, Missouri longed for last summer and fall. The decision of Baltimore’s State’s Attorney to indict all the police officers connected with the death of Freddie Gray while in their custody turned demonstrations about the case into street parties today. The announcement that the cops had been charged with the most serious charges possible and faced decades in prison was exactly what the city needed to restore the peace that was disrupted by violent riots earlier in the week. But even as the nation sighs in relief at the prospect of calm in Baltimore, the upcoming trial and the ongoing debate about the significance of the case may raise more questions than can be answered by the indictment of six officers. If, as may happen, the officers are not convicted, the prospect of violence will be great. Nor is it likely that much light will be shed in the debate about the future of troubled urban areas like Baltimore or law enforcement in the rush to jail the cops in the case that has given new life to a largely misleading narrative of racism.

    OMG! They’re all whites!

Don’t laugh. Leftists are saying just that usually using some version of “they act white or support the white power system so they’re actually white” line of ‘reasoning’. I think Twitchy has some tweets from such dummies. (Notice: I used some Jive there at the end so I’m not racist.)

    • mobuyus

Don’t you worry they will white wash the black ones.

  • Minicapt

Self-inflicted injury, so there is much blame to be distributed onto the enemies of the people.

      Suicide by cop.

another step closer to Barry’s federalized local police

“We cannot continue to rely on our
military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set.
We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as
powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

This narrative will not be allowed to die, it will be reanimated sometime over the next 24-48 hours like Frankenstein’s monster.
    Just watch!

Farrakhan and Sharpton are already looking for the next controversy to milk.

To study black grievance industrial complex, I recommend tuning in CNN News, especially late at night or on weekends. Essentially one sees black news hosts talking to black newspeople, or black newspeople talking to black whiners or one sort or another. I have yet to see or hear, on any TV channel(other than FOC News) and interview with a policeman, of any kind. it is pure one-sided propaganda. On the bright side, CNN News ratings must be plummeting. Who in their right mind would watch wall-to-wall black whining?

CNN News is so obsessed with the Baltimore riots – -in support of rioting — they no longer cover the Nepal earthquake disaster. Amazing.

      • BillyHW

Yeah, when did CNN turn into the black grievance channel?

      • Rosenmops

CNN is now basically Black Entertainment Television (BET).

  • There are plenty of problems to deal with.

Body cams for all officers. This will keep the good cops free from being scapegoats. And bad cops and street thugs will have a much harder time hiding their crimes.

The war on drugs is a miserable failure and clearly responsible for the “war” mentality in too many police localities. It needs to be totally overhauled.

But as long as the black community refuses to turn in black thugs and murders in their midst, there will continue to be proportionally more black arrests than other ethnic groups. This problem can only be done by blacks themselves. As long as Jesse Jackson profiles black young men – everyone will – for good reason.

Making dugs legal will make things worse.

      • How much worse could it get?

How much longer should we continue using the same “drug war” mentality?

Years ago I went to Amsterdam. I smoked a joint in a tiny coffee shop that was right next store to a police station. No one worried about a thing. There was no violence.

When I came home to the USA, the first day in the local news has a story about a shoot out between cops and couple of pot dealers. Two people were killed.

Since Washington state legalized pot over two years ago, I do not recall any new articles dealing with violence around the marijuana industry. There have been number of large public gatherings where the majority of people smoked pot. Again, no violence.

Asking men with guns (the police) to do piss poor social work (drug law enforcement) is the epitome of stupidity. And in the case of marijuana laws, the social outcome has fractured this nation badly.

        • Drunk_by_Noon

          Don’t fall for it!
Almost all of those black “nonviolent drug offenders” in prison are there as a result of plea deals they took for much more serious and violent offenses.
The drug charges were obviously the lesser charge.

    • BillyHW

      Blacks are also miserable failures.

  • Ron MacDonald

Freddy Gray had a lengthy record, he was a snitch who put on a show every time he was arrested, the scene of the arrest the biggest drug market in the US, and he was arrested because the cops saws him conduct a hand-to-hand drug deal, and he had heroin and marijuana in his system when arrested. Yet, the prosecution state there was no reason to arrest him.

  • Norman_In_New_York

I hope that due legal process will establish the truth. This of course doesn’t excuse the rioters, who have damaged their community and law abiding blacks in the process.

  • Sunshine

I was reading prosecutor is somehow related to Gray family. And Freddie just had surgery on spinal column. This type of surgery is carried out through a small incision in front of neck. Quite possibly a case of defused spinal cord which would explain crushed larynx. Police had no way of knowing this and he was supposed to be at home recovering.
What a cowardly and incompetent administration. Sacrificing cops for the sake of quick peace that will only get worse.

  • cmh

quite obvious the DA is a racist with political ambitions…..the riots are yet to come when the cops are cleared.
