Charlie Hebdo: The literary indulgence of murder

I suppose it is asking too much of a writer called Francine Prose that she write prose anyone would want to read. But on the principle you can only track down terrible ideas by wading through terrible writing you have to endure Prose’s prose.

She attempted to deploy her prosaic talent to explain why PEN, an organisation dedicated to protecting the free speech of writers, should not honour the writers and artists of Charlie Hebdo – murdered by Islamists for exercising their right to free speech.

The narrative of the Charlie Hebdo murders – white Europeans killed in their offices by Muslim extremists – is one that feeds neatly into the cultural prejudices that have allowed our government to make so many disastrous mistakes in the Middle East. And the idea that one is either “for us or against us” in such matters not only precludes rational and careful thinking, but also has a chilling effect on the exercise of our right to free expression and free speech that all of us – and all the people at PEN – are working so tirelessly to guarantee.

Note the dehumanisation. She turns a murder into a “narrative”…

Why were Mallick, Ondaatje silent when “Charlie Hebdo” mocked Christians, Jews?

Francine Prose is a wonderful writer who is also an idiot. This is not uncommon.

    • I myself am only one of those two things.

Indeed… People can write beautiful books and still be very stupid.

Many times there would be song lyrics that looked as if they were strung together by a great philosopher or some deep thinker and it would turn out that the song writer has abosulutely no grasp of the significance of what they wrote. It was just words that went together because they rhymed in a way that complimented a base chord, and nothing else.
At first I didn’t think it possible, but then I’d see too many “musicians” who during an interview couldn’t even string a sentence together and barely remembered the origins of the song they were being interviewed about because they were in a full blown alcohol or heroin binge at the time they wrote it.

I wonder if the same thing doesn’t occure with many fiction writers? What makes a good writer and what makes a good thinker that articulates new and compelling ideas don’t seem to have to go together.
Did Francine Prose just hear some buzzwords at a party and sting them together in a press statement?
The real answer from her could be just as goofy and thoughtless.

… looking forward to reading your wonderful writing.

Do not taunt the ‘Mamba, El Martyachi, she’ll cut your head off!

Wasn’t taunting! And I’m not a stalker or anything. But that’s probably what a stalker would say.

You are now subscribing to the Francine Prose is working tirelessly because she’s a useful idiot narrative. Francine Prose would like to remind you that this white European viewpoint precludes rational and careful thinking.

  • Not shooting … just narrating.

People now see muslims as predisposed to violence and killing from it being sanctioned in the quran.
The CBC fears going after islam even when gays are being slaughtered every day in any of the 57 islamic hell-holes in the OIC.
The CBC backs hamas and doesn’t care the that hamas brutally murders gays in public while also using kids and women as suicide bombers.

Stalin signed a non aggression pact with Hitler and all the good little marxists declared it was the best thing since sliced bread after decades of mutual animosity. Then they worked in Canada and elsewhere at sabotaging the war effort against Hitler during the “Great Imperialist War” until it suddenly became, much to their surprise, the “Great Patriotic War”.

90+% of published writers, especially women, are suffering from a compulsive affliction rather than an excess of talent. Or are they are just exhibiting another much more boring form of idiot savantism? Perhaps the key to those pro islamist like o and m is that as some kind of basic marxists they not only hate Judeo Christian morality, but they love the easily manipulated totalitarianism and carefully structured ignorance that ground level islam represents.

Narrative ? Those are facts, you talentless lefty crone.
