Malaysia: 12 arrested for ‘Islamic State terror plot’

PETALING JAYA: Twelve people have been arrested for what police said was a plot linked to the Islamic State group to conduct attacks on targets in the Klang Valley.

An Islamic State flag and about 40kg of fertiliser was also seized, comprising 20kg each of ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate, and two litres of a liquid believed to be kerosene.

Ammonium nitrate, a common fertiliser, can also be used for minor explosives, while potassium nitrate, also a fertiliser, is commonly used in fireworks and gunpowder.

News of the arrests came as heads of government of the Asean regional grouping began arriving under high security for the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur on Monday and Tuesday. About 2,000 police have been deployed.
