Former PM Jean Chrétien to meet with Vladimir Putin in Moscow

Former prime minister Jean Chrétien is meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week, a tète-â-tète that comes even as relations between Ottawa and Moscow are severely strained over the invasion of Ukraine.

The former Liberal leader, whose law firm, Dentons, has an office in Moscow, is expected to meet Mr. Putin on Thursday in the Russian capital and discuss the current state of relations between his country and the West.

No doubt suggesting Happy Days will be here again if Justin gets in…

I resent a clapped out old vote whore like cretin being pushed forward to ,in any way ,argue our case . why isn’t he on his golf course or metal detecting along beaches? Why allow yesterdays man to inflict anymore damage?

They just can’t pack it in. Leave like George Washington after eight years.

I’m sure the Russians are quite capable of being corrupt liars without you giving them lessons Mr. Chretien.

Really, I’m mean you’re a rich lawyer. We get it. You’re a slimy skeezball. You don’t have to work so hard convincing everyone.

    • Chretien (the ever-slimy) is the Liberals’ ace-in-the-hole.

God knows what deal is being hashed out now and at Canada’s expense.

It’s either you deal with a nuclear armed power or war is inevitable. That is how Iran is going to have to be drawn down from what they are pursuing. People seem to think that tough talk is all that is necessary but Russia has leverage over Europe with their oil and natural gas. How else are you going to ensure war doesn’t happen unless people come to the table? I do not feel Putin is Hitler. The only ones arguing that point are fine with a new world war.

    • Billy Bob Thornton

By dealing with, I mean negotiating. Putin prevented war in Syria in September of 2013. Of course the West has used the backdoor and is now doing air bombings of Syria and using ISIS as the excuse when the West funded the FSA which became ISIS.

The only ones preaching 1984 or Orwellian talk are the ones that use revisionist history to call for war meaning the political class and those that defend them.

    • Minicapt

The good thing about war is that it encourages the clean-up of the riff-raff who poison the dealing to the true nationalists and socialists. Then can we create a new world into which we can press the Mohammedan into his proper place.

    • I would never suggest Putin is Hitler. Perhaps Stalin, but not Hitler.

It is beyond naive to think that the former statesman (used in the loosest sense of the word) Chretien is batting for Canada. He didn’t before and will not do so now.

What will Chretien promise Russia? A portion of Canada’s Arctic?

  • simus1

It is very likely that Chretien and Putin will find themselves in more or less total agreement as he has never been one to burn any bridges when dealing with totalitarians of Putin’s ilk. While the total picture of what their discussions will cover in total will no doubt be total conjecture when observed by media outsiders, there is the historical record which tends to indicate what interests both of them the most.
