Seems awfully light… Six months house arrest for terrorism hoax meant to end engagement

EDMONTON – An Edmonton woman who told the Canadian Forces her sister’s fiancé was a terrorist in an attempt to end their engagement will be under house arrest for six months.

Hana Bedhiafi, 24, sobbed in court as provincial court Judge Elizabeth Johnson told her she wasn’t going to jail.

“You did a stunningly stupid thing, amazingly stupid and thoughtless,” Johnson said. “The kinds of consequences that could flow from this behaviour are difficult to contemplate. However, I am convinced you would never do this again.”

In April 2014, Bedhiafi was “quite upset” with her older sister’s marriage plans, Crown prosecutor Craig Krieger told court. While Bedhiafi and her family believed the engagement was a bad idea, the older sister was adamant about the man she wanted to marry.
