A Conversation with a Frenchman Who Was Outraged at All the Racism Present in America

From ¡No Pasarán! (who lives in France):

I was discussing taxes with an elderly man in France who, needless to say, was complaining that they were too high.

Then I decided to bring up a Republican, who had novel ideas on the subject: “Well, have you heard about Ted Cruz, who wants to do away with the IRS?”

I was expecting some sort of (reluctant) sympathy for the GOP candidate from this invariable Barack Obama fan, but what I got instead froze the blood in my veins, as the reaction amounted to a primal scream, like the one in the painting by Norway’s Edvard Munch.

“Oh, that man, that Republican, he will do away with the taxes, and then it will destroy the blacks and all the minorities!!”…

Being anti-American seems pretty common in France, from what I’ve read over the years.

It ain’t just France, baby! 🙂

We hear this nonsense from almost every country on the globe, at some level. To most of us it’s just another source of entertainment. I suspect one of the odd byproducts of this is a greatly diminished capacity (or desire) to seriously listen to foreign criticism. To us, it’s just noise, because 90%+ is, and the 10% that maybe we should be listening to just gets lost in the shuffle. I think that is where some of the idea that America loves to go all “unilateral” come from. Were just tired of hearing your sh*t (from the world), so we take none of it seriously.

Name the country and I’ll show you their unique take on why America is the source of all evil. It’s a fun game to play!

I do commend Canada where the amount of bat-sh*t-insane stuff coming out of the “Great White North’ has greatly diminished over the last several years, but during Jean Chrétien and Pierre Trudeau administrations it was pretty strident.

I have never understood the knee jerk insulting of America and Americans by Canadians around me my whole life.

Then they go spend all their money there cross border shopping and vacationing in Florida.

They believe they’re superior beings. They are of the opinion their feces has no odor.

      • Drunk_by_Noon

I blame your media, but not just Canadian media, it’s world-wide and people only know what they are told.

They think America is like the Fritz Lang movie “Metropolis”, but with added nicety of endless conveyor belts of blacks and American Indians feeding factory ovens that then crank out bad popular culture and fat people.

My favorite story (I’ll have to look it up again) is that of some douchebag shopping tourist crossing over from Canada that got all mouthy with an American TSA Agent on the American side of the border during his routine round of questions of “who are you and why are you here”. To make a long story short he and his wife were arrested, their car impounded, and he spend a day or two in an immigration detention facility before the wheels of international “friendship” resulted in his administrative deportation and multi-year ban on American travel and transit.
        Good times!
If I remember correctly, his poor wife was rather mortified.
The story was written as a tragedy but read as farce.

        • Uncle_Waspy

Good story, Drunk! The lesson is: Don’t get uppity with authority figures — if there’s no problem, don’t make one.

          • Clink9

We cross all the time and I’ve never had a problem at the border in my life. You would really have to be nuts to cause trouble with someone that can tear your car apart then say, ok, on your way now!

          • Drunk_by_Noon

Oh read on, dear brother Clink! 🙂

          • Drunk_by_Noon

            UPDATE:
Responding to the controversy surrounding the incident, the CPB released its own statement, in which it called into question the troop leader’s claims, to KCCI on Wednesday.

“CBP’s review of this group’s inspection, including video footage review, indicates that our officer did not un-holster or handle his weapon as stated in the allegation. The review revealed nothing out of the ordinary. We have reached out to the Boy Scout troop for additional information in reference to the allegation. The video footage has been referred to CBP Internal Affairs for further review.”

          • Drunk_by_Noon

The funny part was that he was just INSENSED that the uppity Americans were making him wait in line and asking all of these stupid questions when it was OBVIOUS that Canadian shopping tourists were something like 99.9% of the American economy (while the other 0.1% was racism or slavery or oppression).
The reporter sugar-coated it as much as she could, and the entire story was told from his point of view, and even with all that, he just looked like a monster douche, so I can imagine the reality was so-much worse.

The best part was that his car was “aggressively searched” for contraband, so much so, that it was essentially totaled-out by his insurance company, but they didn’t want to pay the entire claim because he was partially at fault, after they read the voluminous number of reports generated by various American law enforcement agencies on the incident.

He was such an atrocious ‘tard that he managed to bring the entire weight of our multi-agency security apparatus down upon his neck, and that is a VERY special kind of achievement. Mostly because they are usually way too lazy or overworked to bother with those kind of display of power on anyone but a confirmed al Qaeda operative. They made an exception for him. By the end of the ordeal he was on the wrong side of Customs, TSA/Border Patrol, The FBI, and even our own State Department hated him.
Eventually it took some very high level Canadian diplomacy to get this guy sprung, ’cause we were going to keep him for a while.
            As I said, good times!

          • Uncle_Waspy

“…it was OBVIOUS that Canadian shopping tourists were something like 99.9% of the American economy (while the other 0.1% was racism or slavery or oppression).”

            Har! I’m stealing this ^^^
            …Well done!

          • Clink9

Hilarious. Such an epic fail. They should make another “Downfall” parody on this cretin.

          • Drunk_by_Noon

I think it would make a hysterical 2-hour TV movie (think planes, trains and automobiles but with an unsympathetic character), which could easily be done as a comedy.
Maybe not so funny North of the border, but still funny.

        • dance…dancetotheradio

Metropolis, the recently discovered full European version not the crap 70’s one with Queen as the soundtrack, right?

          • Drunk_by_Noon

Yep, that’s the only version I have seen!

      • Justin St.Denis

That is because sanctimony is among Canada’s main exports.

    • dance…dancetotheradio

I wrote an essay and volunteered to debate the affirmative side of Canada joining the States in Grade 9.
I don’t remember winning so I probably lost.
See, in Grade 9 I was already washing dishes in a hotel restaurant and saw how much of my money was held back for the government on payday.
My main beef with Americans is foreign policy, mostly since Nixon.

      • Drunk_by_Noon

There’s always something to like or dislike about America, and our “foreign policy” is often cited as a basis of criticism, but rarely does anyone expand on that theme.
It’s like “the racism” or “the capitalism” or whatever it is we are doing. I think mostly it’s just a fig leaf for “those damn Yanks!”

Maybe, as an American, “I can’t see the forest for the trees”, but I think we are benevolent and restrained to a fault, especially during the Nixon administration. There was Détente, China, and not nuking North Viet Nam into a charcoal briquette.

If we were of the mind to (and we aren’t because it’s just not part of our national character) we could have enslaved the world ten-times over by now, and everyone would be singing our praises too, because we would control all thought.

Really, we could make the iron grip that North Korea has over the minds of their own population look amateurish. There would be no “other”. There would just be America with the only other option being the blackness of space, but we’d probably own that too.
        😉

        • dance…dancetotheradio

I’m gonna cherry pick a f’rinstance or two.
-South Vietnam fell because the Democrat controlled Congress would not authorize funding to defend them from the North once Nixon had ended that war.
-Macarthur wanted to bomb the ‘North Koreans’ to oblivion because he knew they were all Chinese soldiers. For that he was sacked.
          Or three.
-Carter thought Khomeini was a neat guy.

          • Drunk_by_Noon

Was that what you cited in the 9th grade?
Are you the illegitimate son of S.A.C. General Curtis Lemay by chance?
            🙂

          • dance…dancetotheradio

That wouldn’t be a bad thing!

It would make you the most awesome person in the universe!

          • Drunk_by_Noon

            At least.

  • Dana Garcia

France hates America for rescuing it in WWII; America’s existence reminds them of being pathetic weaklings who needed to be saved by outsiders.

Regarding racism, the French liked blacks well enough when the only ones they saw were jazz musicians. Now that numerous Africans reside in France, diversity looks a little different.

    • Drunk_by_Noon

I’m sure they were highly disappointed to find out that not all blacks were Josephine Bake and Charlie Parker.

      • Dana Garcia

You know the Parisians were enthralled with Josephine’s banana skirt — primitive but still artsy.

        • Drunk_by_Noon

At that time, she was an exotic, and to your average jaded Frenchman of the day, was as nouveau as it got.

“he will do away with the taxes, and then it will destroy the blacks and all the minorities”

  • Ron MacDonald

I spend a lot of time in the U.S. and have not seen it once.

    • Drunk_by_Noon

      Seen what?

      • Ron MacDonald

        Racism.

        • Drunk_by_Noon

It’s greatly exaggerated as if all contemporaneous or current events knowledge stopped in 1950, or even 1850.

To us, it betrays a serious level of ‘something’. It’s as ridiculous as expecting to see redshirted Mounties on horseback riding through the streets of Toronto, or looking forward to seeing orphans, now employed as chimney sweeps, doing choreographed musical numbers in the streets of London.

I actually find this quiet typical for France. I can recall how even in the late 50s and early 60s people in France complaining about how the Americans did much more damage than the Germans during WW II. I must also say that none of these people actually lived or came from an area that had been bombed. At the same time they hated the Germans and of course the English. Come to think of it they never had a positive thing to say about any country outside their own. I also found it interesting how so many would rant and rave against the French president and yet vote for him at election time. Of course anti-Semitism was never in short supply either, again even from those who probably wouldn’t recognise a Jew if they encountered one. If you are looking for hyperbole and out-to-lunch exaggeration they tend to excel. When friends discovered that I read Le Figaro (conservative at the time) instead of Le Monde (a French version of the Guardian), they would rant and rave that no intelligent person should read this fascist rag. Le Figaro is every bit as well written and intellectual as Le Monde, but for them anything other than communist or socialist was fascist.

What I find however truly disgusting is hearing the same idiotic and false narrative from Americans themselves. The worst is spewed by those from the so-called places of higher learning. If I hated my own country to such an extent, I would move to a different country. Mind you we have no shortage of the same sick-minded loons here in Canada and to them I say the same thing. Either get over yourself or leave.

France, fortunately, is scheduled for destruction under their new muslim overlords.
I for one, will not miss Europe or France.

The museums were nice, though, and some of the castles and smaller villages. Pity.
