Islamic State v al-Qaeda: the battle within jihad

Little-noticed, al-Qaeda has a new capital. While its leader languishes in an unknown hiding place – probably in the Pakistan-Afghan borderlands – his followers in Syria have seized an entire province from the hands of the Assad regime, and its main city, Idlib.

This means that the rival wings of militant jihad have two competing centres: Idlib, in north-west Syria, and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant‘s (Isil) headquarters in Raqqa, north-east Syria.

The victory in Idlib on Saturday by a coalition of Islamist groups led by Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, shows that President Bashar al-Assad is a long way from winning the civil war, something many thought likely after his forces moved to retake Aleppo in June 2013.

Gee, I think we’re allied with Al Qaeda now. Well this morning at any rate.

  • Linda1000

Gee, weren’t the 9/11 shaheed bombers affiliated with Al Qaeda? Well, let’s invite Syria Al Qaeda to take down the TD Centre or CN Tower since they seem to like tall structures as targets. Canada has no business or nothing to gain by wading into the quick sand of ME tribal wars.

    • I think they may be our allies now on account of we’re battling ISIS to protect our other allies, the Muslim terror states of Saudi Arabia, Iran Qatar etc.

      • Billy Bob Thornton

The US funneled in weapons to the FSA and when the US, Britain and France couldn’t get that war with Syria then ISIS mysteriously appeared. It seems to me that the US creates enemies because its economy is dependent on war. Don’t forget how Al Qaeda started in Afghanistan back in the 80’s.

The US has a history also of wanting puppet governments like Ukraine, Iraq, Panama, Chile, and so forth. Stop pretending the US is pure and moral.

        • Blacksmith

Yup, all the worlds problems are the fault of us Americans, we sure pulled one over on the world when we established islam 12 centuries or so before we existed.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

But you are still ignoring the atrocities of the US invading 50+ nations since WW2. Remember during the colonial period of Britain and France established ME borders. It seems to me that the West doesn’t ever think it does anything wrong. The fact is the US did give weapons to the FSA and when no war could happen due to the House of Commons in Britain you must’ve watched the news. ISIS mysteriously appeared coincidently in Syria and Iraq where the US wanted to go. People need the truth and not to be told how to think.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

It seems like you only want the answer that you want and could care less about what really happened!

          • Norman_In_New_York

You must be looking in the mirror as you type these words.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

Well no. The US wants Assad gone and still does and you do not know what goes on in the background so stop thinking that the neocon media is 100% correct. The fact is whether media is liberal or conservative the outcomes are still the same. The wars occur and the agendas proceed forward. I want non-interventionism. You want globalism and interventionism. I am just skeptical and don’t trust mainstream media. Yes even BCF is mainstream since it is globalist and imperialist and plays the narratives.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

            What neocon media?
I’ll give your thoughts a fair read but that’s a fucking showstopper.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

Most media in Canada is interventionist why else do you think wars happen without much discussion. That alone states and proves that media whether silent or vocal will result in the same thing. Remember neoliberalism is what all parties agree in. Everything else is either watered down or more authoritarian. Non-interventionism and pacifism are hard to come by these days especially with the rise of populism.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

So Global is left? So NP is left? Well to someone as right wing as Attila that might be the case but to people who understand the spectrum we live in the real world!

          • Norman_In_New_York

So what are you doing here? You’re have never changed any mind before this and are not about to now. Take your dumb doctrines elsewhere.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

Well there is such thing as freedom and well I can leave whenever I choose. As for people feeling sorry for Zionists well they shouldn’t. Zionism by definition means continuing the war doctrine so to prevent WW3 well no I won’t stop commenting because we need sane people in parliament meaning those that challenge the mainstream. Mainstream means war on demand these days. It means austerity. It means making people pay more for less. It means privatization. It means more globalism. It means probably the draft returning. It means people putting up with populism rather than reasonable discussion. So no I think you are 100% wrong. I will continue being skeptical and I won’t give in to fascist anger.

          • Norman_In_New_York

No, Zionism means the restoration of Jews to their homeland and flourishing therein, even if it means having to fight the genocidal criminality of our subhuman inferiors like you.

As for World War II, it ended when the Soviet Union collapsed. We are now in World War IV, having that been declared on us by the global jihadists you are in bed with.

BCF, send in the troll patrol.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

No not the Americans but the warmongers governing them.

Obumbler can’t decide which flavor of pisslam he loves more.

  • Everyone Else

For better or worse it’s in our interest to be allied with those who are trying to hold a country together. If the Islam problem is ever going to be solved, the solution must include Muslims having greater loyalty to their country than to transnational Islam.

When he became the new Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi “certified Indian Muslims’ patriotism saying they “will live and die for India” and it was “delusional” of al Qaida to think India’s Muslims will “dance to their tune”.

So it’s not “to hell with all Muslims and let them kill each other”, but if there are any who are more patriotic than Islamic, then maybe those could be encouraged.

    • dance…dancetotheradio

      Why does India any muslims?
Wasn’t that the premise of partition?

      • Everyone Else

They didn’t all go and some have come back or migrated from elsewhere. They’re now about 15% of India.
