‘Open the goddamn door!’: Desperate final pleas of Germanwings captain emerge

Dramatic recordings from the Germanwings flight’s black box have revealed the captain’s desperate attempts to break into the cockpit to regain control of the plane.

According to transcripts published today, captain Patrick Sondheimer screamed ‘Open the goddamn door!’ as his killer co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately flew the aircraft into an Alpine ravine after he had left to go to the toilet.

Yesterday, it was revealed that Lubitz was living ‘on the edge’ because he feared that his deteriorating blurred vision would cost him his pilot’s licence.

This type of pilot suicide has happened at least half a dozen times in the last twenty years. I think it is only after the fact that people realize that the warning signs were there. No matter what precautions you take, sometimes bad things are going to happen. In fact it’s easy to ague that this bad thing happened as a direct result of precautions taken to prevent a different type of bad thing from happening.
Honestly, it was a terrible tragedy, but what are you going to do? Even if the doors weren’t there and this guy was determined to do a suicide by pilot he would have found another way to do it.
Like I stated above, I suspect the warning signs only become obvious after the fact. If we start to have regular psychiatric exams for pilots the guy who is determined to do this will learn to keep his mouth shut to pass his psych exam.

We have created legions of narcissistic zombies in our post war world. In his mind, there was no one else on that plane when he crashed it… The passengers were merely insignificant stage props in his own personal tragedy.

I find it interesting that his breathing was quote “normal” up until the moment of impact. This, even when it was quite obvious that the pilot and most likely the cabin crew were trying to break into the cockpit.

This suggests to me a level of acceptance of his fate that was determined well before he sat in the seat.

I can live with being accused of insensitivity. I can’t live with being driven into the ground.

Agreed, though that’s a seemingly minor viewpoint today. Occasionally Darwin shows up to prove it.. arguably not often enough.

Many pilots must have obsessive personalities when it comes to the myriad external details they must keep “on file” for instant recall to succeed in a very demanding profession. It seems very unlikely that someone like Lubitz would have passed unnoticed among them for very long without his unsettling qualities (no matter how well concealed, he, Lubitz assumed they were) not being brought to the attention of their peers and superiors.

What about his conversion to Islam as reported by a German newspaper? Is it just me, or does anyone else think the investigators are hiding the “religious” aspect? Mental illness is being used to cover up that aspect…unless the German paper doesn’t have it’s facts right…??
