A fifth girl from Bethnal Green Academy travelled to join Islamic State (Isil) and was only stopped after her plane was halted on the runway, it can be revealed.
The 15-year-old deceived her parents, secretly amassed money and sneaked on to a flight in exactly the same way as three other teenagers from the school – Kadiza Sultana, 16, Shamima Begum, 15, and Amira Abase, 15 – who left in February to become “jihadi brides”.
Her case is particularly concerning, however, since it took place in December, more than two months before the other girls left.
The disclosure will renew questions about whether the authorities did enough to prevent Kadiza, Shamima and Amira from leaving.
The 15-year-old, who cannot be named, was removed from a British Airways flight to Istanbul on 6 December. Police, alerted by her family, stopped the aircraft as it taxied for takeoff.
