Evening photo: Northern lights seen from the UK and Alaska

The aurora borealis, or the northern lights as they are commonly known, over Derwent water near Keswick in the Lake District. Owen Humphreys/PA

Bonus: People across the UK have been enjoying the celestial display of the aurora borealis, or northern lights, seen here over Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland. The phenomenon is caused by eruptions on the surface of the Sun, and this most recent activity has been unexpectedly strong.

I’ve only ever seen one brilliant display of the northern lights in southern Ontario in living memory. It was truly awesome. As is that picture.

I’ve seen them from the Yukon (in winter). But it was very, very cold.
