MP Steven Fletcher: Supports Physician-Assisted Suicide — in Some Cases

Conservative Party MP Steven Fletcher talked with Brian Lilley at the Manning Networking Conference in Ottawa.

Fletcher is an advocate for physician assisted suicide in cases involving the full consent of a cognitive adult.

Under his private member’s bill (C-582) — which he says resembles the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision — those suffering from conditions like dementia and chronic depression wouldn’t qualify.

It would only be a matter of time before someone used the Charter to argue that restrictions against the mentally ill using assisted suicide violated their equality rights.

And don’t children have rights too?

I know it’s Wiki but it does reference a source.
    Hippocratic Oath:
While there is currently no legal obligation for medical students to swear an oath upon graduating, 98% of American medical students swear some form of oath, while only 50% of British medical students do. 10

you know, for such an important issue this jerk populist MP seems to be stumbling, …thinking and making this up on the fly over well thoght out and reasoned morality that will effect many innocent victims having put government in charge of morality (again)!

He’s assuming his idealist ‘safeguards’ will be strictly applied by who.. the government?

If anyone knows exactly how far they can throw government and the Supreme Courts of bias patronage for that matter It should be (honest) lawmkers….

I agree, he seems to think that these safeguards will be fairly applied. Really? If that were so, why is it that laws like these tend to undergo changes which then widen the gap of what’s permissible. This law opens the door to include more candidates, just like same-sex marriage will pave the way for other relationships, such as polygamy, polyamory, and so on.
