Via accused Raed Jaser ‘con artist’ not terrorist, his lawyer says

TORONTO – Alleged Via Rail terrorist Raed Jaser was a cash-strapped “con artist” trying to bilk Chiheb Esseghaier and an undercover FBI agent out of their money, a jury heard Thursday.

In his closing, Raed’s lawyer, John Norris, portrayed his client as a huckster “trying to run short cons and long cons,” not a terrorist conspiring with co-accused Esseghaier.

Jaser aimed to fleece Esseghaier and an FBI agent posing as a rich Muslim American businessman with schemes that lined Jaser’s pockets.

To execute his scams, Jaser created “a front” or “legend” of a terrorist, Norris said.

Oh yea, I am so buying that defense.
