Guardian: Gender pay gap will not close for 70 years at current rate, says UN

The income of female workers across the world will lag behind men’s for another 70 years if the gender pay gap continues to reduce at the present painfully slow rate, the UN is warning in a report that lays bare global inequality in the workplace.

More than half a century after the United States passed the Equal Pay Act, and 45 years after similar legislation in the UK, women across the world earn 77% of the amount paid to men, a figure that has improved by only three percentage points in the past 20 years, according to a report from the UN’s International Labour Organization (pdf) (ILO).

Over and above the pay gap, women face a “motherhood pay gap”. Women with children can expect to earn less when they return to work than childless women, with the difference increasing for every child they have, according to an ILO analysis.

The report, released ahead of International Women’s Day on Sunday, also shows that the gender gap in work participation has barely shifted in two decades. Since the Beijing Declaration on women’s rights was signed by 189 governments in 1995, the difference in men’s and women’s labour market participation rates has dropped by only 1%. Today 50% of the world’s women work, compared with 77% of men. In 1996, the figures were 52% and 80% respectively.

“The overriding conclusion 20 years on from Beijing is that, despite marginal progress, we have years, even decades, to go until women enjoy the same rights and benefits as men at work,” said Shauna Olney, chief of the gender, equality and Diversity branch of the ILO…

The “gender gap” will NEVER close unless women stop having children. And then it won’t matter anymore. How much tax money is wasted on ridiculous thing like this?

When are we going to do something about the “working gap”? Why do 77 percent of men have to go to work and only 50 percent of women? Why can’t we force more women to go to work, or let more men not work. I’m one of the 77 percent and I don’t want to work any more. When is the UN going to do something for me?

    • Tom Forsythe

And what about the death gap? Over 90% of workplace fatalities are male.

      • And the health gap. Women live on average 7 years more than men.

  • Alain

This is just more marxist crap. The pay equity by its many names is not about women equally qualified and done the exact same job as men getting the same pay. That has been the case for quiet some time here. It is about comparing apples with oranges. I recall when it was accepted by the federal public service and clerks and secretaries claimed discrimination for not being paid the same as managers. Then the nurses claimed it was discrimination not to be paid the same as doctors. It mattered not the least that women managers (oh yes they did exist) and women doctors were paid the same as the men doing the same work. If the UN were truly concerned about women they would address the extreme oppression of women in Muslim countries and a few other places.

The women I work with who do the same job as me (about 5 of 100), shockingly enough get paid exactly the same as I do!

      • BillyHW

So do the women I work with, but they actually do a lot less work than I do.

  • winniec

Do women want to have children and have the same OUTCOME as women who DO NOT have children? So it seems. Women who DO NOT have children earn more money than men who DO NOT have children. Coincidence?

    HOW ABOUT!!!…
Instead of infusing the ‘construction workers’ with Gov’t stimulus welfare $$$$$$$$$$$
you put it in the hands of ‘nurses’….
as we have an aging population and
nurses spend their money just like construction workers do
stimulus money should go the rounds to stimulate different industries and this gives the traders more work to figure out where to short…

  • Richard_Romano

My God this is so lame. Women don’t work as many hours as men do, they tend to avoid work in jobs that are dangerous and are well-paying, they take inordinate amounts of time off due to child-bearing, and they don’t find satisfaction in work like men do. The whole thing is a ridiculous waste of time and energy.

    • Frau Katze

And someone had to have children, or it’s truly the end. I can’t believe how stupid these journalists are.

      • FactsWillOut

It’s OK, the gay men can adopt African kids.

  • andycanuck

Even if they all stopped having kids, it still wouldn’t change unless they were forced into dangerous and/or skilled blue collar jobs that they don’t want today or for the past 50 years despite Women’s Lib.

    • Frau Katze

Right. My son makes good money working 70/hrs a week in a remote camp in northern BC (gets one week off per four). Few women would go for that.

      • Justin St.Denis

My son does similar work in Cold Lake, Alberta. Even his wife couldn’t deal with it. She lives in Edmonton. They get together every other weekend.

Guardian: blah blah blah, mendacious lies, class warfare, and misrepresentations of statistics courtesy of some Marxist UN dick heads

  • Consider that the global economy will fall apart, that graying populations will dwindle, that precious little snowflakes in the West have no or very few useful skills and will find themselves lucky if job security is all the benefit they are likely to receive.

Who gives a crap about gender pay gap?

  • Clausewitz

Shouldn’t these asshats be more worried about the Muslim wage gap for women. I’m quite sure it’s much larger than in the civilized world.

    • Frau Katze

      But it’s “unmentionable”.

  • FactsWillOut

Maybe when they start to make real good femme-bots, these bitches will shut up.

  • Speaksvolumes

Ultimately what the brownskirts want is for women to be paid exactly what men are paid, regardless of how much time is taken off or what the profession is. They want nurses to be paid the same as surgeons, and kindergarten teachers to be paid the same as physicists. It’s Marxist-socialism.

    • canminuteman

Either that or they are just too stupid to figure it out. I wouldn’t write off really really stupid just yet.

      • Justin St.Denis

i have observed that women tend to reflect less intelligence when they are in larger groupings. Perhaps it’s hormonal/emotional, but every really smart woman I know avoids all-female events (baby showers, wedding showers, hen parties) like the plague.

  • Hard Little Machine

The real unemployment rate in the UK is approaching something like 20%.

  • As an old fart, I have listened to this feminist BS for 45+ years.

I am sick of it. Keep whining girls. I couldn’t care less.

I will do nothing to help feminist causes until the nursing profession is 50% male.
