Evening photo: Chilko Lake, BC

No photographer given. Chilko Lake is the area where the Coast Range gives way to the interior plateau. It is not easily reached: I visited there several times in the 1970s.

The road from Williams Lake (Highway 20) to Bella Coola (on the coast) was not paved at all at that time. It is paved now, so I have heard, but Chilko Lake requires driving on even more remote (and bad) roads. But the scenery is spectacular.

Unfortunately all my (many) photos are on film.

Highway 20 is even not shown on Google Maps. The largest town shown below is Kamloops.

the road is mostly paved but the track down from the plateau to the coast (the steep part ) is still gravel and truly a scary thing to drive in bad weather

Yes, I’ve done it a few times, and it was quite an experience. Never did it in bad weather.

      Just give it time.

More remote and wild than ever, really. Politics and land ownership issues have gutted the whole Chilcotin area. There are far less people there (and an even greater reduction in businesses) than there were 20 years ago. Aside from big building projects in the eastern reserves of course.
