Can Israel Survive?

Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East and North Africa. Eight million Israelis are surrounded by some 400 million Muslims in more than 20 states. Almost all of Israel’s neighbors are anti-Israeli dictatorships, monarchies, or theocracies — a number of them reduced to a state of terrorist chaos.

Given the rise of radical Islam, the huge petrodollar wealth of the Middle East, and lopsided demography, how has Israel so far survived?

  • Interesting summing up. However, I would say the greatest danger to its existence Israel faces is the fifth column inside its own borders – the Israeli leftists actively working against Israel in NGOs like Peace Now. If the left comes to power, with Herzog, Livni and the like at the helm, Israel could well disappear due to bad leadership.

Don’t forget the Obama admin funneling cash and advisers to those same far left groups to help defeat Bibi and then add in the fake Jewish groups that are fronts for far left types like Sorros.

    • Attempts to sway the current election in Israel by outsiders has failed. Voters trust Netanyahu.

While Israeli leftists appear to have a screw loose, I wonder if anyone can take them seriously during times of conflict.

      Just my thoughts.

    No Nuclear Deterrent. No Israel.

I have a friend (a professor at UNB) who is born an Israeli Jew, and who was wounded on the Syrian front, at the outset of the Yom Kippur War. He served as an officer in an armored unit. He publishes in international affairs.
Often we have talked about Israel’s future — and I tend to be a pessimist about everything in international affairs, including Israel. Often I would raise the specter of the international boycott, the international antipathy towards Israel, and so forth. But he would always emphasize that Jews in Israel will never surrender, and never be driven out of their homeland.
I have read histories of the various wars Israel has fought, including the 1948 War of Independence, and my feeling is that he is right. Israel is the Jews’ homeland, and that is that. When I talk about Iran developing an atomic bomb, my friend counters that Israel as MIRV tipped hydrogen bombs on missles, ready for use. When we talk about the quisling “peace now” left, we should note that Israeli public opinion has hardened against the Arab-Islamic threat, especially given the atrocious human rights massacres going on everywhere outside of its borders.
Finally, my professor friend has gone back to volunteer to support the IDF during various recent fights. The last time Israel fought Hezbollah in Lebanon, he was there working as an interpreter (he speaks and reads fluent Arabic), speaking to captured Hezbollah fighters. His take was far different than the media cartel’s. He spoke of shell shocked fighters cringing in defeat — not the “victory” Hezbollah’s media allies in the west have claimed. The same held true during Israel’s last incursion into Gaza. One the shelling started, the pro-Hamas terrorists did not fare that well, Speaking one-to-one with them, they lost the will to fight.
I remember seeing my professor friend, after he came back from the Lebanon experience. He looked terrible, as if he truly was in a fight. (Then he was in his mid-50s). (The Israeli government flies volunteers back and forth for free during emergencies). Having said that, I have faith in my Jewish Israeli friends. They have a history of fighting hard for their homeland. My friend says, “If Israel stands alone, we will fight alone”.

arabs think a mob given rifles is an army.

    • Unfortunately:

The sad reality about Islam’s killers is this; Because Islam makes a continuous claim of religious legitimacy, Islam, as a system, can rely on a huge, unpaid, unseen, unorganized, individually acting, empowered to act, widely distributed group of highly motivated devout believers who are willing to kill in order to keep Islam the way it is.

These devout believers in reality represent an unconventional unseen phantom army. An army where no one needs orders and each soldier knows exactly what to do. An army where no one is really in control. An army as deadly as any on earth.

Israel can always rely on the Muslim passion for murdering other Muslims first and foremost, a strategic advantage to be sure.

Israel was in greater danger in 1948 than it is now, since it had to smuggle in much of its weaponry and faced the same hostility at the UN as it does now. In that war, 6,000 Israelis were killed in action, 1% of its population. Since then, they have turned to the Bible for further motivation. “Yea, though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we will fear no evil, for we are the meanest muthas in the valley.”
