Meet Fr. Joshua Johnson, Baton Rouge’s youngest priest—and a rapper

I’m honestly not trying to be flippantly negative here. If this kind of thing, a rappin’ priest wearing an NFL cap, helps, well, good on it.

I just really, really doubt it helps.

The thing is, the Anglican Church has been doing this Vibrant Outreach To The Disadvantaged Youf routine for decades and… yeah. My theory is that even The Young, poor people, the Disabled and Ethnic Minorities know when they’re being sung down to.

And if you like rap, there are way better rappers than this guy.

Anyway, maybe I’m just being narrow-minded. Thoughts?

  • Hard Little Machine

Best monologue ever (except for obnoxious waiter and obnoxious haberdasher)

  • Alain

I really do not see a problem; either it works or it doesn’t. He isn’t inciting violence, rape, destruction and killing nor is he beheading non believers. I vote for giving him a break.

    • Frau Katze

      He seems harmless enough.

      • Justin St.Denis

“harmless enough” perhaps, but almost certainly completely ineffective, too. Which is to say this chap is a waste of space and air as far as being a Catholic priest goes. But then, Pope Francis seems bent on becoming ever so popular with every Protestant sect in existence at the expense of the business of being the Roman Catholic Pontiff. Strange times.

      • There’s something undignified about this – in the context of the priesthood – which I just instinctively recoil from. I don’t think people want priests they can relate to.

But I’m not a Catholic or even a Christian, except culturally, maybe, sort of, so, you know.

  • Justin St.Denis

I don’t think your take is narrow minded, probably because I share it. I recall (with horror) the “folk mass” that was foisted upon us in the 1960s. It sucked then, and it didn’t work either. I see this as the same-old same-old.
