British actor Benedict Cumberbatch issues grovelling apology after calling black people ‘colored’

Cumberbatch, who is nominated for an Oscar, starred alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor in 12 Years a Slave

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has apologized after describing black people as ‘colored’ on US television, saying he is ‘an idiot’ and is ‘devastated to have caused offense’.

The 38-year-old Sherlock star was widely condemned after using the racial term during a debate on the lack of diversity on British screens on the PBS talk show Tavis Smiley last Wednesday.

But on Monday night, he issued an apology for his ‘incorrect’ and ‘offensive’ use of the phrase, saying: ‘I’m devastated to have caused offense by using this outmoded terminology.

‘I offer my sincere apologies. I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done’…

I do not understand why it is even an “offence” in the first place.

        I think so.
But now it is called the ACLU.

  • tom_billesley

He’s British – he called them coloured not colored.

  • Martin Luffa

It’s too bad he didn’t troll with the truth, whites are the most coloured people. So many shades of skin, colours of eyes and hair.

  • DMB

He would have really sound stupid if he called black people in the U.K. African American!

“I do not understand why it is even an “offence” in the first place.”

“Cause da mastah, he say so. Now grovel, worm!”

  • Minicapt

Go back to referring to them as “darkies”, and give them something to complain about.
Perhaps they’ll hyperventilate and stop breathing.

I am offended by his grovelling

Some people have busy lives that don’t revolve around the ever-changing universe of changing liberal rules about what’s acceptable.

He’s from the UK, so he missed the memo, I guess.

Calling them “coloured people” is wrong.
Calling them “people of colour” is right.

It is hard to keep up.

BTW, heads up for those out driving tonight.
Be careful, you can never be sure where the ‘ice of colour’ is to be found.

“coloured people” (WRONG) vs “”people of colour” (RIGHT).
Seems illogical to me. Is there, anywhere, a logical explanation of the difference?
My predominant skin colour is pink-ish. According to the English Language, It would appear that I should be a person of colour AND a coloured person but I appear to be neither. I’m confused but, then, perhaps I’m supposed to know and supposed to be suitably put-in-my-place because I am a “white” male. But I’m not – not white, that is. (We’ve already agreed I’m a sort of pink-ish.) I think I’m male (I do have three children but without the problem of giving birth so I hope that allows me to claim “maleness”). Maybe I’m “not female”.)
What words am I allowed to use and not use? Or, being a not-coloured, not-female, am I allowed to speak at all?

It does not matter what name they dream up for “people of color” , within a year its a curse word.

  • Canadian

    Black is not a colour.

    • AlanUK

One might argue that White is not either – or perhaps it’s the perfect blend of all colours (have a look in a prism some day … Newton did).
