Suspected Ottawa jihadist John Maguire’s death ‘could be staged’

There are some doubts being cast on the validity of the death notice posted on a pro-Islamic State Twitter feed proclaiming the “martyrdom” of John Maguire.

Canadian security officials were trying to verify the claim that Maguire, 24, was killed in a firefight near the embattled Syrian town of Kobani, as announced on Jan. 14 by Twitter user Abu Saman, who is known to have close ties to Islamic State militants.

However, a similar claim made by IS militants through social media — announcing Belgian national Tarik Jadaoun had been “martyred” in Syria — was proven false when he slipped back into his home country, apparently faking his own death in order to carry out terror attacks on his homeland, according to media reports.
