Maajid Nawaz: Reading Animal Farm changed my Islamist views

The Liberal Democrat candidate Maajid Nawaz has said how reading George Orwell’s 1945 novella Animal Farm pulled him back from radical Islam by making him realise that it is “impossible to create a utopia”.

Nawaz, who is running for election in the three-way marginal seat of Hampstead and Kilburn, was reading the book in prison in Egypt, in the company of jihadists, when he realised the consequences of trying to create a utopia.

Animal Farm? Oxford University Press wouldn’t touch it. There’s pigs in it.

Cor. A mooslim that can read! Whatever next?

Animal Farm should be taught -as I have done for years – in every high school classroom in Canada. There isn’t a book today that can match Orwell’s insight into totalitarian regimes.

Was he compelled to read it? (Terrible punishment to anyone involved)
Or did he read it for fun? (Terrible punishment for him, according to the Ayatollah. There is no fun in Islam …)
