Heroic cat finds baby abandoned in a box, crawls in to keep him warm

A long-haired tabby cat has been hailed a hero after finding an abandoned baby on the street and climbing into the box he had been dumped in to keep him warm.

The compassionate cat then raised the alarm by mewing to draw attention to the baby in the city of Obninsk, western Russia.

Local resident Irina Lavrova, 68, had gone to throw out some garbage when she heard Masha the cat calling loudly near the apartment block.

The stunned pensioner could not believe her eyes when she saw the baby boy lying amongst the trash in a box with Masha next to him.

    Isn’t biological hardwiring awesome?
Masha the cat climbed in with the baby because it was warmer than anywhere else.
Still, ‘props’ to a cat for having more protective instincts than that baby’s own mom.

    • I think the cat just wanted the box to himself.

I think the reason that Masha the cat was making noise was that she was loosening up her jaw in preparation to eat that baby.

        • Shocking!

At the very least she was going to steal his breath.

I was going to say that, but I didn’t think anyone else would get the reference, so thanks Xavier!

One of my brothers-in-law swore that was true (he is now banned from setting foot inside my house, for other reasons) and went apoplectic when I walked him through all of the steps that would have to happen for that to actually be possible.

I was 12 at the time and he was in his late 20’s, and a policeman at the time and later became a prison guard for the ‘California Youth Authority’ (think prison guard for violent seventeen and younger offenders). He is quite possibly one of the dumbest people I have ever had close contact with, but he lacked the good sense to embrace his retardation and just stop saying stupid things.

      • But she was willing to share, so…

    That’s so amazing.

    Love the hero kitties stories!

Wonderful story compared to everything else going on. I am very glad the baby was saved and will probably be better off than with its biological mother. Kudos to the cat whatever its motivation: something we can never know and only guess.
