#CharlieHebdo unity rally: Where was U.S. President Barack Obama?

Why didn’t Obama go? It’s a question, and a headache, the White House is now dealing with in the aftermath of what turned out to be a stunning display by millions of people in Paris and across the country who wanted to honour the 17 victims of three days of bloodshed in France. On Sunday and Monday morning, the U.S. news shows had their reporters and commentators weighing in on the absence of a high-profile American at the rally.

  • David Murrell

    Great photo satire.

There’s a good, chippy press briefing with the White House press thingy facing off with the press corps (shown live on FOX News). Lot’s of good questions.

  • mobuyus

obama is in no way a high-profile American.

  • chayisun

Obama wasn’t there because he’s a muslim. Apparently, this traitor is going to gather everyone together for a summit on terrorism. You know, how NOT to hurt muslims feelings.

    • John

“The future must not belong to those who insult the *prophet* mohammed”.

  • MannieP

Who cares? What’s in it for Zerobama? Plus, they would only let him sit at the childrens’ table.

  • Millie_Woods

He stayed home because “the future doesn’t belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.”

Too bad. No mawkish display of grief by world leaders is complete without top representation from the US.

  • tom_billesley

Kerry will be there “later this week”

  • Ron MacDonald

There’s no doubt that he is sympathetic to Islam.

  • Exile1981

Was he off golfing or just spending some “quality” time with Reggy?

    • mauser 98

      yesireee…..playoffs , ditch Mooch & brats , a few lines and Reggie

  • Dana Garcia

I hear there was some good football on TV Sunday.

And what’s more important to Obama — defending western civilization or seeing a great game?

  • Markalta

It doesn’t really matter…the march or whatever they called it was a farce anyway…Hamas leader was there, Turkey’s leader was there…and now Erdogan wants an Islamaphobia rally too…it was a joke…no cartoons paraded, or re-printed. So, to quote from an old movie…”it just doesn’t matter…it just doesn’t matter…”

  • Xavier

Obama couldn’t attend because France is too small to contain his ego.

  • Hard Little Machine

Because even in his absence everything has to be about him, doesn’t it?

  • Xavier

The WH first cited security reasons. But Bibi went, didn’t he?

  • Xavier

Barry was going to send Al Sharpton when heard CNN announce one of the killed gunmen was an African-American.

  • Xavier

If you ever doubted that someone else was in charge…

White House says President Obama was not the one who made the decision not to go to Paris march; says debate didn’t make it to him – @IsaacDovere

“Not my fault!” – ever heard that before?

  • Thermblog

Obama was there, it’s just that he’s the most transparent president ever.

(I wish this was mine but it’s a comment I saw elsewhere.)

I watched a little bit of this speech with morning coffee today and could only stomach the first five or so minutes. In any case, Obama’s (in)famous speech in Cairo to the Muslim world makes for very interesting viewing in light of recent events:

*WARNING: viewing can be hazardous to your mental well being!*

Wikipedia info re: this speech from June 2009:

  • He’s such an embarrassment.

I can’t believe the Americans let him in twice.
