Muslim scholar could seek legal advice if Irish media republish Mohammed cartoon

A TRINITY LECTURER and Muslim scholar has said that he would consider legal advice if a member of the Irish media retweets or publishes a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed from Charlie Hebdo.

Dr Ali Selim, of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, made the comments following the shooting dead of 12 people at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris today.

When asked by Niall Boylan on 4FM if he (Boylan) retweeted the cartoon would his life be in danger, Dr Selim – who condemned the shootings – said:

“Not your life would be in danger but definitely we will check the Irish law and if there is any legal channel against you, we will take it,” he said…

  • Like Canada Ireland still has a Blasphemy law.

    • winniec

The Irish blasphemy law was meant to defend the established Church of Ireland. The Supreme Court ruled that the 1937 Constitution had extinguished the common law offence, stating “It is difficult to see how the common law crime of blasphemy, related as it was to an established Church and an established religion could survive in … a Constitution guaranteeing freedom of conscience, and the free profession and practice of religion.” It refused to allow the prosecution (of a blasphemy charge), stating “in the absence of any legislative definition of the constitutional offence of blasphemy, it is impossible to say of what the offence of blasphemy consists … In the absence of legislation and in the present uncertain state of the law the Court could not see its way to authorising the institution of a criminal prosecution”.
In other words, the Irish court does not know what ‘blasphemy’ is in a multicultural society without an established church. What is a sacred dogma to one may be considered ‘blasphemous’ to someone else.

        IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR BCF:

        Dear BCF,

Kindly take note of what Canada’s blasphemy libel provision says in your defence:

“Defence – Section 296(3) of the Criminal Code provides:

No person shall be convicted of an offence under this section for expressing in good faith and in decent language, or attempting to establish by ARGUMENT used IN GOOD FAITH and conveyed in DECENT LANGUAGE, an opinion on a religious subject.”

My advice is go fuck yourself with a road flare.

    • disqus_W6sfZCiOd8

      best advice ever.

    • Censored_often

Exactly! Go fuc* yourself and go back to the islamist shithole you crawled out of and leave Ireland.

      • winniec

That’s exactly what ‘CHARLIE HEBDO’ has been saying to everyone: “SCREW YOU”.

  • Surely the Irish will not even listen to this crank.

    • Pete_Brewster

The Protestant Irish won’t. They’ve done the job of letting the arselifters know where to go better than the English could. Ulster has resisted Islamization to a degree unknown elsewhere in western Europe.

The Teigs are another story. Take the piss out of Protestants and Jews and Cathleen ni Houlihan’s your girl.

      • I find it adorable you think cultural Protestants have the guts and intelligence to survive the Islamic hordes.

      • Mohammed Waza Asswad

I can say for certain the real Irish have no love for islam. They are all for giving people the benefit of the doubt – but once they’ve sussed out what a crock islam is – all bets are off as to how far they will go to rid themselves of an externally (or internally ) imposed menace.

    • mobuyus

The IRA where a mile away in obamas motor-car.

      • What are they up to these days? Nothing much?

        • Pete_Brewster

Well, aside from guaranteed ministerial posts in Northern Ireland’s cabinet—bit like the deal Hezbollah have in Lebanon—and Gerry Adams being within striking distance of being the next Teeshock, Provisional Sinn Féin aren’t up to much bombing and killing. These days they leave that to the younger men of the “Real” and “Continuity” IRA so they can pretend terror has nothing to do with Irish Catholic nationalism.

          • It’s too bad there are no brave Ulstermen to deal with him.

            Like they were brave….

  • PS- Kevin Vickers has been made Canada’s ambassador to Ireland:

    (polite applause)

    • Pete_Brewster

As a reward for services rendered and not as punishment for some slight, I trust? Having to spread the gospel of Canada among the Teigs isn’t much of a reward.

If a stable, prosperous country of no real concern was wanted, there are plenty with better weather. What was wrong with Bermuda?

      • First of all, Kevin Vicker’s presence is a rewarding experience for anyone. Even Luxembourg would have been lucky to have him.

Secondly, Ireland is lovely this time of year. Better in the summer, so I’m told.

Irish people are so friendly and so not stuck up on an incestuous form of government like the monarchy.

I’m sure Mr. Vickers will be happy there.

        • Pete_Brewster

Oh, they’re right charmers to North American tourists—they need the money to pay their debts to the Germans. Loyal Ulstermen who won’t lick the Pope’s arse, not so much.

Also, they hate the Israelis as much as any Pali. The Teigs are gradually dispensing with the pretense of Christianity. They’ll hold on to the Roman church’s Jew-hate to the bitter end.

          • You still don’t get that this Ulsterman stuff is a fantasy. What – is Quatermain your go-to guy? I suppose it hasn’t occurred to you that Ireland has been a functional democracy since it left the island with an official religion, the very island that might as well be another part of Pakistan. I’m sure it’s also completely beyond your scope of imagination what great buddies the Jewish state and the Vatican are and what “fine” Englishmen embraced fascism before the Second World War.

All of this over Kevin Vickers’ promotion.

    • disqus_W6sfZCiOd8

      yea!

  • b_marco

As related as anything.. this is a most base example of boilerplate.

    • Frau Katze

      Another “Muslims fear backlash”!

  • Maurixio Garcia S

Where is the freedom of expression ? I guess Muslims want to set new laws now , democracy is under treat from the religion of peace.

    • nobull

you “guess” mooslims want to set new laws – with all due respect, not new laws.

SHARIA LAW. Ya know, where they stone a woman to death for being raped or behead you for any perceived slight (real or imagined) of their “prophet”.

      • Frau Katze

He knows, but English isn’t his native language.

  • roccolore

Muslims are litigation jihadists who demand the West cave to their needs.

  • ontario john

I see the difference now between liberal muslims and radical muslims. Radical muslims will kill us to enforce their beliefs on us, while liberal or moderate muslims want to use the legal system to take away our freedoms. So we have this fascist pig in Ireland want to use legal means, and we have that great liberal iman in Ottawa who wants laws against us. I’m sure that liberal sects new museum in Toronto can teach the kiddies proper censorship when they go there on field trips.

    • Frau Katze

Pretty much. The “moderates” just different means for the same end.

  • Norman_In_New_York

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Europe can no longer remain half-Muslim, half-kuffar.

    • Frau Katze

Europe made a very bad mistake. They’ve nothing to look forward other then more crime and violence.

  • winniec

Ali Selim should get on an airplane and move to Pakistan where he can execute blasphemers, stone them, hit them with sticks, shoot them and never go to jail.

  • john s

Point of reason here, folks: The guy is NOT the problem, the fact that he might be able to use the law in this way is. The problem in France was not the muslims a holes who did the deed, it was the cowardice and legal framework which resulted in Charlie Hebdo being singled out as the only target. There will always be a-holes who want to kill people with whom they disagree, there always have been, what is different is the attitude that such lunatics are being encouraged by cowardly laws and people all over the world.
Also, screw islam and muslims in general. Yes I have read the Koran and I have no use for it or anyone who would derive inspiration from such insipid claptrap.

  • soobie

It’s either them or us. I pick the Irish. They have leprocorns. Blasphemy is hilarious law. God has never come down to spank our bottoms for cussing him.

    • Pete_Brewster

On the contrary, the Poor Old Woman and her hajji bull deserve each other, and she deserves every black eye she’ll get.

Actually, Cathleen’s turning Muslim will be an improvement. She’ll have to give up the drink and keep her ugly face covered so nobody has to retch at the bloody sight of it.

FTP and the IRA, and F Islam beside them.
