One quarter of Welshmen descended from warlords

Fully one quarter of modern-day Welshmen are descended from a grand total of 20 medieval warlords. The warlords must have been able to select just about any woman at will, but also there would be prestige and power from marrying into the families of the warlords. This is similar to the huge number of descendants of Genghis Khan, with as many as 1 in 200 men worldwide descended from him.

Something is always being selected for. In our day, power and prestige still matter, but effective birth control as well as entrenched monogamy limit the number of descendants that even the most powerful men have. In the old days, the powerful translated their political and military success into offspring, but today the powerful, who in the West anyway are mainly the wealthy, don’t seem too interested in this. Once in a great while you hear about some rich man who has a secret hidden family, but these guys are just pikers compared to Welsh or Mongolian warlords.

Get with the program, you guys!…

Related: Warfare and reproductive success in a tribal population: The reasons why warriors in small-scale societies participate in war are poorly understood. Evolutionary anthropologists have argued that individuals can benefit from participating in warfare despite the risks they face. Unfortunately, field data to evaluate this hypothesis are exceedingly rare. Here we present the first quantitative study on warfare and reproductive success among a pastoralist population. Participation in warfare for elders is associated with a greater number of wives and children…

Well, that’s no great surprise. Wales isn’t that big a place.

Beware of any Arab who claims direct descent from Mohammed, for example. 1400 years on anybody who has any Arab blood at all is descended from Mohammed.

Although according to Islamic lore, Mohammad had no male offspring, since he was the last prophet and the prophets are all of the same line.

It’s possible, I grant, but extant histories aren’t detailed enough on the case of Elizabeth of Seville (born Zeida) to be certain. Certainly room exists for reasonable doubt.

So I shan’t hold the possible presence of some Spanish king’s Arab concubine in her family tree against Elizabeth, by God’s grace Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (and of France, but that’s another story).

        • I absolutely think the Queen should invade France. Unless Putin wants it of course.

  • 1 in 200 men descendants of GK !?! Out of 3.5 billion men = 17.5 million men. What of the women? Could this figure be realistic? Where/how was it obtained?

  • As for Welshmen – 1/4 of 1.5 million = 375,000 divided by 20 = 18’750. More realistic, maybe.

The basis of early warfare was usually land, livestock, slaves (the common herd), and the eventual ransoming of noble military prisoners and their families.
Groups such as the Trojans who had tended to be complete pests and had little left in the way of bargaining chips at the end were harshly dealt with. Their noblewomen ended up as slaves on the various flax plantations which supplied the semi processed feedstock linen for making warship sails. The work involved in processing flax for linen at this time in history was very exhausting and extremely unpleasant.

Sidebar; could it be ‘jus primae noctis’ ? Late Middle Age and Renaissance era texts struggle to determine if this practice ever occurred. Voltaire included the concept in 1746’s Dictionnaire philosophique, and his writings were a big part of why so many people believe this practice really happened. Voltaire also wrote a play revolving around droit du seigneur, but he condemned the practice. From a logistical standpoint, the process of a nobleman having sex with a newly married woman poses a number of problems. A number of “secret” weddings would probably happen, as a result. If you chose not to marry in secret, could also try assembling a group of burly friends and family members to assault the coming nobleman.
