2014 was a bad year for movies — here’s what went wrong

LOS ANGELES — “It was a great year for movies” is one of those phrases that gets trotted out annually around this time, as bloggers whip up their top 10 lists and prestige films start preening for awards attention. On the whole, it can’t always be true.

It pains me to say it, but this is one of those years when it’s not. 2014 just wasn’t all that great for movies, and that means creatively, at the box office and for the overall health of the business — three factors that always seem to run in a pack.

2015 will not get better only worse. Let’s take a look at the possibility of who the next James Bond will be. One of the leading candidates is Idris Elba who is a black actor who played Nelson Mandela. The makers of the James Bond movies have already deviated so far off from the original story line of James Bond that it barely resembles the original films played by Sean Connery who really was someone of Scottish Ancestry. Having an actor that resembles Nelson Mandela playing a role scripted for someone of Scottish Ancestry who is white is ridiculous. There comes a point in time where it is better to end to films with long running series such as James Bond, Star Trek that have deviated so far off the original story line than continue to remake them. But left wing Hollywood is more interested in diversity than making good quality movies. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/04/idris-elba-james-bond_n_4541389.html

    • Yea that is a dumb idea.

To make up for the loss of volume from $14 ticket prices I predict that movies in 2015 will start to have actual commercial breaks during the movie not just a half hour of previews. When Peter Jackson can get away with 4 hr movies and his audience has a 75 second attention span it’s almost necessary to run commercial breaks. Colorado will announce the first weed friendly theater. The median age of the cast of Expendables 4 will be 71.

When Hollywood has to rely on Marvel Comics for its scripts, you know it’s in deep shit.

there does seem to be a growing rejection of CGI by cinematographers and art directors in favour of realism which is good for the support crafts, but there is still a stupid insistence of remaking unremarkable movies and franchising really weak premises.
