Egyptian court permanently bans Jewish festival on ‘moral’ grounds

(Reuters) – An Egyptian court permanently banned a Jewish celebration that has taken place since the 1979 peace deal with Israel and asked the government to remove the tomb where it takes place from a list of official shrines, judicial sources said on Monday.

The court said its decision was due to “moral offences” committed in previous years at the three-day festival celebrating the birth of Rabbi Jacob Abu Hasira. It did not elaborate on what the offences were.

Jews, mostly from outside Egypt, have congregated every year at the 19th century tomb around Jan. 1 even though the festival was canceled for security reasons after the 2011 uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak.

Monday’s ruling would make the ban permanent unless a higher court overturns it on appeal…

      Methinks not.
I won’t go into Tijuana, and my personal preservation instincts and risk assessment skills are notoriously poor.

Around about 1990, I walked across the border into Tijuana and spent a few hours wandering around the town. Couldn’t drive the rental car over as it would have been stripped and insurance wouldn’t cover it. Kind of a scary place even back then. I was glad to make it back to the U.S. side and it was hard to ignore the beggars on the Mexican side walking through the long official crossing. I don’t think I would try the same thing again these days.

Egypt gets rid of the Muslim Brotherhood, yet can’t rid itself of anti-Semitism. I used to cheer when Muslms did something right, but I no longer do. I now realize they do it purely for their perceived self interest, which in the end will turn out not to be.
