Offended Catholic…writes Letter to the Editor

Less than a week before the Dec. 8 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the patron saint of the United States for Catholics, The Post saw fit to print the would-be witty headline “Immaculate Deception” [Sports, Dec. 2], a title offensive to many Catholics, observant or otherwise.

The headline marred the problematic but poignant story of a young athlete assuming a false identity in order to play college football. Once more, the usual rhetorical question must be posed: Would The Post print a headline that risked offending Muslims or Jews?

Francis Edward Zapatka, Washington

Wow! That really makes the news worldwide…no more insulting Catholics…well, maybe.

Another letter (same link), by someone with a non-Islamic name, criticized the newspaper (Washington Post) for creating a ‘negative attitude’ to Muslims.

I don’t think the WaPo would have qualms about posting a headline similarly offensive to the Jews. However the Mohammedans are known to possess delicate sensibilities, and such ‘innocent japes’ are to be carefully avoided.

      Double standards all around.

  • Madonna released The Immaculate Collection in 1990, and I don’t recall anyone being murdered over it.
