War Clouds on the Horizon? A large war is looming absent preventive American vigilance.

The world is changing and becoming even more dangerous — in a way we’ve seen before.

In the decade before World War I, the near-hundred-year European peace that had followed the fall of Napoleon was taken for granted. Yet it abruptly imploded in 1914. Prior little wars in the Balkans had seemed to predict a much larger one on the horizon — and were ignored.

The exhausted Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires were spent forces unable to control nationalist movements in their provinces. The British Empire was fading. Imperial Germany was rising. Czarist Russia was beset with revolutionary rebellion. As power shifted, decline for some nations seemed like opportunity for others.

Actually, two wars are looming for the U.S. – one internally and one externally. If the current political power brokers survive the first, the country won’t survive the second.

“Near hundred year peace” is a bit of an exaggeration. After Waterloo, there was the Crimean War, Austro-Prussian War, Franco-Prussian War, Wars of Italian and Greek Independence, Carlist Wars in Spain, various Balkan wars, and a host of rebellions against Russian or Ottoman rule.

Thank God those sophisticated Europeans won’t have to worry about American imperialism and meddling in the future.
Their insightful nuance will save us all.
    Just you wait and see!

The peaceniks of Sweden are worried about Russian subs, as Putin grows more aggressive and sounds frankly like he’s a bit unhinged.

Turkey’s leader is growing ever more hostile, yet it’s still in NATO and remains fixated on entering the EU.

      Just two examples.

I love you Vlad, and nobody can take that away from us.

    • Yup NATO will be just fine;)

The slogan ‘kinder, gentler America’ is interpreted by dictators as ‘more gullible, less prepared America’. The result is opportunists like B&E man Putin trying to seize half of Ukraine and who knows what next? Maybe Estonia, Lithuania or Belorus or litoral Romania.
Jihadists and Iran think there is a free lunch because America is unprepared and uncertain of own interests. ‘Nice’ doesn’t work.

The alliance between the US and Israel: bound to fade as mass immigration brings more and more Muslims.

    • Yes it will, as will happen in Canada too, Harper will not be in power forever and the NDP and Liberals voice support that is in my belief only an inch deep.

      • Exile1981

They voice a lot more support for Palestine than for Israel and as they see the Muslims as an important swing vote they will pander to them by tossing Israel under the bus.

I read this and I have to disagree with Dr Hanson. The west is winking out without a fight. There won’t be a big war. There will only be slow collapse. We’re headed for something like the Dark Ages or the fall of the Roman Empire.

    • I hope not.

I foresee more of a fracture into a bunch of small feudal kingdoms run by two bit dictators.
