A Sydney women’s health service says it has been told a nine-year-old girl has left the country to be married overseas.
The incident is one of a dozen child bride cases since June, the Immigration Women’s Health Service in western Sydney told ABC News.
The service said it was unable to get specific information on the claims but it was believed that the girl would be married in the Middle East.
“Unfortunately we can’t do anything because the girl already travelled overseas,” Immigration Women’s Health Service Director Dr Eman Sharobeem said.
While the claims have not been confirmed, the issue of arranged marriages has led the Federal Government to launch a new initiative to help young women who are being forced to marry.
