LAHORE: Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) Chairman Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Ashrafi on Wednesday condemned terrorism and the atrocities committed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
“The Pakistan Ulema Council believes that there is no room for terrorism, extremism and barbarism in Islam and no group has the right to kill innocent people. The Pakistan Ulema Council also believes that rulers of a country do not have the right to massacre their people,” Ashrafi said in a statement issued to media.
He said that such terrorist organisations had been formed in reaction to the oppression meted on citizens by the sitting Syrian government.
“The action against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant will not be effective as long as the people continue to be oppressed in Iraq and Syria on the basis of their sects and beliefs,” the PUC chairman said.

Perhaps not very newsworthy in itself — another pro forma condemnation of ISIS — but I cannot resist Doughboy! He and the Ulema Council are not infrequently in the news defending a very conservative view of Islam: including advocating underage marriage and saying that DNA evidence should not be considered for rape cases, because it is “unethical and un-Islamic.”
In short, there is little difference between their outlook and that of ISIS.
