A Hindu temple in Sirajganj’s Salanga stopped the Durga Puja for nine hours, protesting against alleged encroachment of temple land and the implicating of local Hindus in a case.
Juthika Roy Chowdhury Dolly, chief of the Chaitrahati Sri Sri Jagadiswari Mandir committee, said they had stopped performing the rituals from 6am to 3pm on Wednesday.
She alleged a local, Delbar Hossain, occupied the temple’s land and was harassing Hindus by lodging a ‘false’ case against them.
The puja resumed in the afternoon after the local administration and police assured them of restoring the temple property and investigating the case.
Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Hindu community, started on Tuesday.
Superintendent of the Sirajganj Police SM Imran Hossain said they had assured the protesters of recovering the encroached land within 15 days.
