Millbrook, NS – Gordon Fraser has been slaughtering pigs, cows, chickens and turkeys at his Millbrook slaughterhouse for more than 30 years.
People from all over the rural region bring their livestock to the spotless facility for butchering and they pick them up in freezer bags a few hours later.
That could all be ending soon.
The state sanctioned Turkey Producers Marketing Board came to his property this month and threatened to fine him $5000 if he slaughtered one more turkey for his neighbours.
His crime? He doesn’t employ a provincial inspector to watch over him while he works and the province is forcing all backyard flocks through provincially tested abattoirs.
