A University of Ottawa chemical engineering student says he feels guilty for not confronting John Maguire on his extremism before the jihadi went to fight in Syria.
“If I knew he was going to get this extreme, maybe I would have confronted him to save his own life,” said Hammad Raza said. “I regret it because now he’s going to kill himself and he’s going to kill many people, too.”
Raza said he met 23-year-old Maguire in the summer of 2012 in the prayer room at the University of Ottawa, less than a year before Maquire embraced the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham and left Ottawa.
Raza said he offered the newly converted man his knowledge and guidance on Islam during their first meeting in the prayer room. Raza also invited Maguire to his mosque for worship.
