Opera Singer Fired For Making Fun Of Some Delicate Flower’s Nail Polish

A singer fired by Ottawa’s Opera Lyra for comments he made about a man wearing bejewelled fingernails is denying the remarks were homophobic.

Valerian Ruminski, who was to perform in the opera Tosca, says he realizes that he made a serious mistake when he posted the mocking comments on Facebook just as the annual Capital Pride festivities were under way.

The post led the company to fire him, and now he says he is scrambling to try to stem the damage that, he fears, may threaten other singing jobs in Canada.
