#DiversityIsOurStrength in Bangladesh: Youth held for ‘posting anti-Islam photo’ that resulted in a mob attacking four Hindu houses

Police yesterday (July 25, 2014) arrested a college student for “posting an anti-Islam” photo on Facebook, an allegation over which a mob attacked four Hindu houses in Fatikchhari upazila of Chittagong on Friday.

The 22-year-old, a resident of Brindabanpara village in the upazila, was held in Panchlaish, Chittagong, around 12:30pm, said Mofiz Uddin, officer-in-charge of Fatikchhari Police Station.

Hundreds of people vandalised the Hindu houses, including that of the youth, in Brindabanpara in the early hours of Friday, saying he had posted on Facebook a photo “belittling Islam”.

On Friday night, Fatikchhari police filed a case against him under the Information and Communication Technology Act, 2006.

Asked whether the photo had indeed been posted by the detainee, the OC said intensive investigation was needed to find it out. The arrest was made based on primary investigation, he added.

However, no case had been filed against the attackers as of 10:30pm.

Since the incident, family members of the youth have been in custody at Fatikchhari Police Station. They will be kept there until the situation becomes normal, said the OC.
