Second Aussie suicide bomber kills five near Baghdad

AN Islamic State fighter known only as Abu Bakr has become the second Australian to carry out a suicide bombing in Syria and Iraq, killing five people in a Shia-dominated district near the centre of Baghdad.

Coalition ministers have expressed shock and alarm at the bombing, which is the first for an Australian in Iraq and comes less than a year after a Queensland man carried out a suicide bombing in Syria for the al-Qa’ida group, Jabhat al-Nusra.

The Weekend Australian understands authorities have yet to identify Bakr and where he might be from.

In a rare attack by a Western fighter, Bakr detonated an explosives vest near the entrance of the Abdullah bin Rawahah mosque in Shorja — the Iraqi capital’s largest market district — on Thursday morning.
