Tragedy, not misogyny, in Isla Vista

A killing spree by a mentally ill young man, Elliot Rodger, in Isla Vista, California left seven people dead and 13 wounded. The victims were shot and stabbed before the attacker committed suicide. According to his family—who learned of their son’s intentions that day and rushed to the scene in a desperate attempt to stop him—he had been in the care of therapists and was known to the police, who allegedly assessed his mental health and concluded that he posed no threat. He was a troubled young man, a would-be Lothario who resented the fact he had been rejected by the girls he pursued. He recorded a number of videos on YouTube in which he spelled out his insane intention to kill girls at a sorority on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara, then commit suicide as an act of revenge.
